The Passover Lamb

1 Now Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175 in the land ^H776 of [fn]Egypt ^H4714,

2 “This ^H2088 month ^H2320 shall be the beginning ^H7218 of months ^H2320 for you; it is to be the first ^H7223 month ^H2320 of the year ^H8141 to you. 3 Speak ^H1696 to all ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712 of Israel ^H3478, saying ^H559, ‘On the tenth ^H6218 of this ^H2088 month ^H2320 they are each ^H376 one ^H376 to take ^H3947 a [fn]lamb ^H7716 for themselves, according to their fathers’ ^H1 households ^H1004, a [fn]lamb ^H7716 for [fn]each household ^H1004. 4 Now if ^H518 the household ^H1004 is ^H4591 too ^H4480 small ^H4591 for a [fn]lamb ^H7716, then he and his neighbor ^H7934 nearest ^H7138 to his house ^H1004 are to take ^H3947 one according to the [fn]number ^H4373 of persons ^H5315 in them; according ^H6310 to [fn]what each ^H376 man ^H376 should eat ^H398, you are to [fn]apportion ^H3699 the lamb ^H7716. 5 Your [fn]lamb ^H7716 shall be a male ^H2145, without ^H8549 blemish ^H8549, a year ^H8141 old ^H1121; you may take ^H3947 it from the sheep ^H3532 or from the goats ^H5795. 6 [fn]And you shall keep ^H1961 H4931 it until ^H5704 the fourteenth ^H702 H6240 day ^H3117 of the same ^H2088 month ^H2320, then the whole ^H3605 assembly ^H6951 of the congregation ^H5712 of Israel ^H3478 shall slaughter ^H7819 it [fn]at twilight ^H6153. 7 Moreover, they shall take ^H3947 some ^H4480 of the blood ^H1818 and put ^H5414 it on the two ^H8147 doorposts ^H4201 and on the lintel ^H4947 [fn]of the houses ^H1004 in which ^H834 they eat ^H398 it. 8 And they shall eat ^H398 the flesh ^H1320 that night ^H3915, roasted ^H6748 with fire ^H784, and they shall eat ^H398 it with unleavened ^H4682 bread ^H4682 [fn]and bitter ^H4844 herbs ^H4844. 9 Do not eat ^H398 any ^H4480 of it raw ^H4995 or boiled ^H1311 at ^H1310 all ^H1310 with water ^H4325, but rather ^H3588 H518 roasted ^H6748 with fire ^H784, both its head ^H7218 and its legs ^H3767 along ^H5921 with its entrails ^H7130. 10 And you shall not leave ^H3498 any ^H4480 of it over ^H3498 until ^H5704 morning ^H1242, but whatever is left ^H3498 of it until ^H5704 morning ^H1242, you shall burn ^H8313 with fire ^H784. 11 Now you shall eat ^H398 it in this ^H3602 manner ^H3602: with your loins ^H4975 girded ^H2296, your sandals ^H5275 on your feet ^H7272, and your staff ^H4731 in your hand ^H3027; and you shall eat ^H398 it in haste ^H2649—it is the Passover ^H6453 of Yahweh ^H3068. 12 And I will go ^H5674 through the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 on that night ^H3915 and will strike ^H5221 down ^H5221 all ^H3605 the firstborn ^H1060 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, both ^H4480 man ^H120 and beast ^H929; and against all ^H3605 the gods ^H430 of Egypt ^H4714 I will execute ^H6213 judgments ^H8201—I am Yahweh ^H3068. 13 And the blood ^H1818 shall be a sign ^H226 for you on the houses ^H1004 where ^H834 H8033 you are; and I will see ^H7200 the blood ^H1818, and I will pass ^H6452 over ^H5921 you, and there shall be ^H1961 no ^H3808 plague ^H5063 among you [fn]to destroy ^H7843 you when I strike ^H5221 the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread

14 ‘Now this ^H2088 day ^H3117 will be a memorial ^H2146 to you, and you shall celebrate ^H2287 it as a feast ^H2282 to Yahweh ^H3068; throughout your generations ^H1755 you are to celebrate ^H2287 it as [fn]a perpetual ^H5769 statute ^H2708.

15 Seven ^H7651 days ^H3117 you shall eat ^H398 unleavened ^H4682 bread ^H4682, but on the first ^H7223 day ^H3117 you shall [fn]remove ^H7673 leaven ^H7603 from your houses ^H1004; for whoever ^H3605 eats ^H398 anything leavened ^H2557 from the first ^H7223 day ^H3117 until ^H5704 the seventh ^H7637 day ^H3117, that [fn]person ^H5315 shall be cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 from Israel ^H3478. 16 Now on the first ^H7223 day ^H3117 there shall be a holy ^H6944 convocation ^H4744, and on the seventh ^H7637 day ^H3117 there shall be ^H1961 a holy ^H6944 convocation ^H4744 for you; no ^H3808 work ^H4399 at all ^H3605 shall be done ^H6213 on them, except ^H389 what ^H834 must be eaten ^H398 [fn]by every ^H3605 person ^H5315, that alone ^H905 may be done ^H6213 by you. 17 You shall also keep ^H8104 the Feast of Unleavened ^H4682 Bread ^H4682, for on this ^H2088 very ^H6106 day ^H3117 I brought ^H3318 your hosts ^H6635 out ^H3318 of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714; therefore you shall keep ^H8104 this ^H2088 day ^H3117 throughout your generations ^H1755 as [fn]a perpetual ^H5769 statute ^H2708. 18 In the first ^H7223 month, on the fourteenth ^H702 H6240 day ^H3117 of the month ^H2320 at evening ^H6153, you shall eat ^H398 unleavened ^H4682 bread ^H4682 until ^H5704 the twenty-first ^H6242 H259 day ^H3117 of the month ^H2320 at evening ^H6153. 19 Seven ^H7651 days ^H3117 there shall be no ^H3808 leaven ^H7603 found ^H4672 in your houses ^H1004; for whoever ^H3605 eats ^H398 what ^H2556 is leavened ^H2556, that [fn]person ^H5315 shall be cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 from the congregation ^H5712 of Israel ^H3478, whether he is a sojourner ^H1616 or a native ^H249 of the land ^H776. 20 You shall not eat ^H398 anything ^H3605 leavened ^H2556; in all ^H3605 your places of habitation ^H4186 you shall eat ^H398 unleavened ^H4682 bread ^H4682.’”

21 Then Moses ^H4872 called ^H7121 for all ^H3605 the elders ^H2205 of Israel ^H3478 and said ^H559 to them, “[fn]Bring ^H4900 out ^H4900 and take ^H3947 for yourselves [fn]lambs ^H6629 according to your families ^H4940 and slaughter ^H7819 the Passover ^H6453 lamb. 22 And you shall take ^H3947 a bunch ^H92 of hyssop ^H231 and dip ^H2881 it in the blood ^H1818 which ^H834 is in the basin ^H5592, and [fn]touch ^H5060 some ^H4480 of the blood ^H1818 that is in the basin ^H5592 to the lintel ^H4947 and the two ^H8147 doorposts ^H4201; and none ^H3808 H376 of you shall go ^H3318 outside ^H3318 the doorway ^H6607 of his house ^H1004 until ^H5704 morning ^H1242. 23 And Yahweh ^H3068 will pass ^H5674 through ^H5674 to smite ^H5062 the Egyptians ^H4714; and He will see ^H7200 the blood ^H1818 on the lintel ^H4947 and on the two ^H8147 doorposts ^H4201, and Yahweh ^H3068 will pass ^H6452 over ^H5921 the doorway ^H6607 and will not allow ^H5414 the destroyer ^H7843 to come ^H935 into your houses ^H1004 to smite ^H5062 you. 24 And you shall keep ^H8104 this ^H2088 event ^H1697 as a statute ^H2706 for you and your children ^H1121 forever ^H5704 H5769. 25 And it will be ^H1961, when ^H3588 you enter ^H935 the land ^H776 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 will give ^H5414 you, as He has [fn]promised ^H1696, you shall keep ^H8104 this ^H2088 new [fn]slavery ^H5656. 26 And it will be when your children ^H1121 say ^H559 to you, ‘[fn]What ^H4100 is the meaning of this ^H2088 new slavery ^H5656 to you?’ 27 that you shall say ^H559, ‘It is a Passover ^H6453 sacrifice ^H2077 to Yahweh ^H3068 who ^H834 passed ^H6452 over ^H5921 the houses ^H1004 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 in Egypt ^H4714 when He smote ^H5062 the Egyptians ^H4714, but delivered ^H5337 our homes ^H1004.’” And the people ^H5971 bowed ^H6915 low ^H6915 and worshiped ^H2331.

28 Then the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 went ^H1980 and did ^H6213 so; just ^H834 as Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175, so ^H3651 they did ^H6213.

Death of the Firstborn of Egypt

29 Now it happened ^H1961 at midnight ^H2677 H3915 that Yahweh ^H3068 struck ^H5221 all ^H3605 the firstborn ^H1060 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, from the firstborn ^H1060 of Pharaoh ^H6547 who sat ^H3427 on his throne ^H3678 to the firstborn ^H1060 of the captive ^H7628 who ^H834 was in the [fn]dungeon ^H1004 H953, and all ^H3605 the firstborn ^H1060 of cattle ^H929.

30 Then Pharaoh ^H6547 arose ^H6965 in the night ^H3915, he and all ^H3605 his servants ^H5650 and all ^H3605 the Egyptians ^H4714, and there was a great ^H1419 cry ^H6818 in Egypt ^H4714, for there ^H369 was ^H369 no ^H369 home ^H1004 where ^H834 H8033 there ^H369 was ^H369 not someone dead ^H4191. 31 Then he called ^H7121 for Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175 at night ^H3915 and said ^H559, “Rise ^H6965 up ^H6965, get ^H3318 out ^H3318 from among ^H8432 my people ^H5971, both ^H1571 you and the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478; and go ^H1980, [fn]serve ^H5647 Yahweh ^H3068, as you have spoken ^H1696. 32 Take ^H3947 both ^H1571 your flocks ^H6629 and your herds ^H1241, as you have spoken ^H1696, and go ^H1980, and bless ^H1288 me also ^H1571.”

Israel Goes Out from Egypt

33 And the Egyptians ^H4714 strongly ^H2388 pressed ^H2388 H5921 the people ^H5971 to send ^H7971 them out ^H7971 of the land ^H776 in haste ^H4116, for they said ^H559, “We will all ^H3605 be dead ^H4191.” 34 So the people ^H5971 took ^H5375 up ^H5375 their dough ^H1217 before ^H2962 it was leavened ^H2556, with their kneading ^H4863 bowls ^H4863 bound ^H6887 up ^H6887 in the clothes ^H8071 on their shoulders ^H7926.

35 Now the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 had done ^H6213 according to the word ^H1697 of Moses ^H4872—they had asked ^H7592 from the Egyptians ^H4714 for articles ^H3627 of silver ^H3701 and articles ^H3627 of gold ^H2091, and clothing ^H8071; 36 and Yahweh ^H3068 had given ^H5414 the people ^H5971 favor ^H2580 in the sight ^H5869 of the Egyptians ^H4714, so that they let them have what they asked ^H7592. Thus they plundered ^H5337 the Egyptians ^H4714.

37 And the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 journeyed ^H5265 from Rameses ^H7486 to Succoth ^H5523, about six ^H8337 hundred ^H3967 thousand ^H505 men ^H1397 on foot ^H7273, aside ^H905 from the little ^H2945 ones ^H2945. 38 A [fn]foreign ^H6154 multitude ^H7227 also ^H1571 went ^H5927 up ^H5927 with them, [fn]along with flocks ^H6629 and herds ^H1241, a very ^H3966 [fn]large ^H3515 number ^H3515 of livestock ^H4735. 39 And they baked ^H644 the dough ^H1217 which ^H834 they had brought ^H3318 out ^H3318 of Egypt ^H4714 into cakes ^H5692 of unleavened ^H4682 bread ^H4682. For it had not become ^H2556 leavened ^H2556, since ^H3588 they were driven ^H1644 out ^H1644 of Egypt ^H4714 and could ^H3201 not delay ^H4102, nor ^H1571 H3808 had they [fn]prepared ^H6213 any ^H1571 provisions ^H6720 for themselves.

40 Now the time ^H4186 [fn]that the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 lived ^H3427 in Egypt ^H4714 was 430 ^{H702 H3967 H7970} years ^H8141. 41 And it happened at the end ^H7093 of 430 ^{H702 H3967 H7970} years ^H8141, [fn]to the very ^H6106 day ^H3117, that all ^H3605 the hosts ^H6635 of Yahweh ^H3068 went ^H3318 out ^H3318 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714. 42 It is a night ^H3915 to be kept ^H8107 for Yahweh ^H3068 for having brought ^H3318 them out ^H3318 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714; this ^H2088 night ^H3915 is for Yahweh ^H3068, to be kept ^H8107 [fn]by all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 throughout their generations ^H1755.

The Statute of the Passover

43 And Yahweh ^H3068 said ^H559 to Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175, “This ^H2088 is the statute ^H2708 of the Passover ^H6453: no ^H3605 H3808 [fn]foreigner ^H1121 H5236 shall eat ^H398 of it;

44 but every ^H3605 man’s ^H376 slave ^H5650 purchased ^H4736 with money ^H3701, after you have circumcised ^H4135 him, then ^H227 he may eat ^H398 of it. 45 A foreign ^H8453 resident ^H8453 or a hired ^H7916 person ^H7916 shall not eat ^H398 of it. 46 It shall be eaten ^H398 in a single ^H259 house ^H1004; you shall not bring ^H3318 forth ^H3318 any ^H4480 of the flesh ^H1320 outside ^H2351 of the house ^H1004, and you shall not ^H3808 break ^H7665 any bone ^H6106 of it. 47 All ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712 of Israel ^H3478 shall [fn]celebrate ^H6213 this. 48 But if ^H3588 a sojourner ^H1616 sojourns ^H1481 with you and [fn]celebrates ^H6213 the Passover ^H6453 to Yahweh ^H3068, let all ^H3605 his males ^H2145 be circumcised ^H4135, and then ^H227 let him come ^H7126 near ^H7126 to [fn]celebrate ^H6213 it; and he shall be like a native ^H249 of the land ^H776. But no ^H3605 H3808 uncircumcised ^H6189 person may eat ^H398 of it. 49 [fn]The same ^H259 law ^H8451 shall [fn]apply ^H1961 to the native ^H249 as to the sojourner ^H1616 who sojourns ^H1481 among ^H8432 you.”

50 So all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 did ^H6213; as ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 had commanded ^H6680 Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175, thus ^H3651 they did ^H6213. 51 And on that same ^H6106 day ^H3117 Yahweh ^H3068 brought ^H3318 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 out ^H3318 of the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 [fn]by their hosts ^H6635.
