The Watchman’s Duty

1 Now the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me, saying ^H559,

2 “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, speak ^H1696 to the sons ^H1121 of your people ^H5971 and say ^H559 to them, ‘If ^H3588 I bring ^H935 a sword ^H2719 upon a land ^H776, and the people ^H5971 of the land ^H776 take ^H3947 one ^H259 man ^H376 from among ^H7097 them and make ^H5414 him their watchman ^H6822, 3 and he sees ^H7200 the sword ^H2719 coming ^H935 upon the land ^H776 and blows ^H8628 the [fn]horn ^H7782 and warns ^H2094 the people ^H5971, 4 then [fn]someone who hears ^H8085 the sound ^H6963 of the horn ^H7782 but does not take ^H2094 warning ^H2094, and a sword ^H2719 comes ^H935 and takes ^H3947 him away, his blood ^H1818 will be on his own head ^H7218. 5 He heard ^H8085 the sound ^H6963 of the horn ^H7782 but did not take ^H2094 warning ^H2094; his blood ^H1818 will be on himself. But had he taken ^H2094 warning ^H2094, he would have saved ^H4422 his life ^H5315. 6 But if ^H3588 the watchman ^H6822 sees ^H7200 the sword ^H2719 coming ^H935 and does not blow ^H8628 the horn ^H7782 and the people ^H5971 are not warned ^H2094, and a sword ^H2719 comes ^H935 and takes ^H3947 a person ^H5315 from them, he is taken ^H3947 away for his wrongdoing ^H5771; but I will [fn]require ^H1875 his blood ^H1818 from the watchman’s ^H6822 hand ^H3027.’

7 “Now as for you, son ^H1121 of man ^H120, I have [fn]appointed ^H5414 you as a watchman ^H6822 for the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478; so you will hear ^H8085 a [fn]message ^H1697 from My mouth ^H6310 and give ^H2094 them a ^H2094 warning ^H2094 from Me. 8 When I say ^H559 to the wicked ^H7563, ‘You wicked ^H7563 person ^H7563, you will certainly ^H4191 die ^H4191,’ and you do not speak ^H1696 to warn ^H2094 the wicked ^H7563 about ^H4480 his way ^H1870, that wicked ^H7563 person ^H7563 shall die ^H4191 for his wrongdoing ^H5771, but I will [fn]require ^H1245 his blood ^H1818 from your hand ^H3027. 9 But if ^H3588 you on your part ^H859 warn ^H2094 a wicked ^H7563 person ^H7563 to turn ^H7725 from his way ^H1870 and he does not turn ^H7725 from his way ^H1870, he will die ^H4191 for his wrongdoing ^H5771, but you have saved ^H5337 your life ^H5315.

10 “Now as for you, son ^H1121 of man ^H120, say ^H559 to the house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478, ‘This ^H3651 is what ^H3651 you have [fn]said ^H559: “Surely ^H3588 our offenses ^H6588 and our sins ^H2403 are upon us, and we are rotting ^H4743 away ^H4743 in them; how ^H349 then can we [fn]survive ^H2421?”’ 11 Say ^H559 to them, ‘As I live ^H2416!’ declares ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 [fn]GOD ^H3068, ‘I take ^H2654 no ^H518 pleasure ^H2654 at ^H518 all ^H518 in the death ^H4194 of the wicked ^H7563, but rather ^H3588 H518 that the wicked ^H7563 turn ^H7725 from his way ^H1870 and live ^H2421. Turn ^H7725 back ^H7725, turn ^H7725 back ^H7725 from your evil ^H7451 ways ^H1870! Why ^H4100 then should you die ^H4191, house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478?’ 12 And you, son ^H1121 of man ^H120, say ^H559 to [fn]your fellow ^H1121 H5971 citizens ^H5971, ‘The righteousness ^H6666 of a righteous ^H6662 one ^H6662 will not save ^H5337 him on the day ^H3117 of his offense ^H6588, and as for the wickedness ^H7564 of a wicked ^H7563 one ^H7563, he will not stumble ^H3782 because of it on the day ^H3117 when he turns ^H7725 from his wickedness ^H7562; whereas a righteous ^H6662 one ^H6662 will not be ^H3201 able ^H3201 to live ^H2421 [fn]by his righteousness on the day ^H3117 when he commits ^H2398 sin ^H2398.’ 13 When I say ^H559 to the righteous ^H6662 that he will certainly ^H2421 live ^H2421, and he so trusts ^H982 in his righteousness ^H6666 that he commits ^H6213 injustice ^H5766, none ^H3605 H3808 of his righteous ^H6666 deeds ^H6666 will be remembered ^H2142; but for that same injustice ^H5766 of his which ^H834 he has committed ^H6213 he will die ^H4191. 14 But when I say ^H559 to the wicked ^H7563, ‘You will certainly ^H4191 die ^H4191,’ and he turns ^H7725 from his sin ^H2403 and practices ^H6213 justice ^H4941 and righteousness ^H6666, 15 if a wicked ^H7563 person ^H7563 returns ^H7725 a pledge ^H2258, pays ^H7999 back ^H7999 what ^H1500 he has taken ^H1500 by ^H1500 robbery ^H1500, walks ^H1980 by the statutes ^H2708 [fn]which ensure life ^H2416 without ^H1115 committing ^H6213 injustice ^H5766, he shall certainly ^H2421 live ^H2421; he shall not die ^H4191. 16 None ^H3605 H3808 of his sins ^H2403 that he has committed ^H2398 will be remembered ^H2142 against him. He has practiced ^H6213 justice ^H4941 and righteousness ^H6666; he shall certainly ^H2421 live ^H2421.

17 “Yet [fn]your fellow ^H1121 H5971 citizens ^H5971 say ^H559, ‘The way ^H1870 of the Lord ^H136 is not right ^H8505,’ when it is their own way ^H1870 that is not right ^H8505. 18 When the righteous ^H6662 turns ^H7725 from his righteousness ^H6666 and commits ^H6213 injustice ^H5766, then he shall die ^H4191 in [fn]it. 19 But when the wicked ^H7563 turns ^H7725 from his wickedness ^H7564 and practices ^H6213 justice ^H4941 and righteousness ^H6666, he will live ^H2421 by them. 20 Yet you say ^H559, ‘The way ^H1870 of the Lord ^H136 is not right ^H8505.’ I will judge ^H8199 each ^H376 of you according to his ways ^H1870, house ^H1004 of Israel ^H3478.”

Word of Jerusalem’s Capture

21 Now in the twelfth ^H8147 H6240 year ^H8141 of our exile ^H1546, on the fifth ^H2568 of the tenth ^H6224 month ^H2320, the survivor ^H6412 from Jerusalem ^H3389 came ^H935 to me, saying ^H559, “The city ^H5892 has been [fn]taken ^H5221.”

22 Now the hand ^H3027 of the LORD ^H3068 had been ^H1961 upon me in the evening ^H6153, before ^H6440 the survivors ^H6412 came ^H935. And He opened ^H6605 my mouth ^H6310 [fn]at ^H5704 the ^H5704 time ^H5704 they came ^H935 to me in the morning ^H1242; so my mouth ^H6310 was opened ^H6605 and I was ^H481 no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 [fn]speechless ^H481.

23 Then the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068 came ^H1961 to me, saying ^H559, 24 “Son ^H1121 of man ^H120, they who live ^H3427 in these ^H428 ruins ^H2723 in the land ^H127 of Israel ^H3478 are saying ^H559, ‘Abraham ^H85 was only one ^H259, yet he possessed ^H3423 the land ^H776; so to us who are many ^H7227 the land ^H776 has been given ^H5414 as a possession ^H4181.’ 25 Therefore ^H3651 say ^H559 to them, ‘This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the Lord ^H136 GOD ^H3068 says ^H559: “You eat ^H398 meat with the blood ^H1818 in it, raise ^H5375 your eyes ^H5869 to your idols ^H1544 as you shed ^H8210 blood ^H1818. Should you then possess ^H3423 the land ^H776? 26 You [fn]rely ^H5975 on your sword ^H2719, you commit ^H6213 abominations ^H8441, and each ^H376 of you defiles ^H2930 his neighbor’s ^H7453 wife ^H802. Should you then possess ^H3423 the land ^H776?”’ 27 You shall say ^H559 this ^H3541 to them: ‘This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the Lord ^H136 GOD ^H3068 says ^H559: “As I live ^H2416, those who ^H834 are in the places ^H2723 of ^H2723 ruins ^H2723 certainly ^H518 H3808 will fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719, and whoever ^H834 is in the [fn]open ^H6440 field ^H7704 I will give ^H5414 to the animals ^H2416 to be devoured ^H398, and those who ^H834 are in the strongholds ^H4679 and in the caves ^H4631 will die ^H4191 of plague ^H1698. 28 And I will make ^H5414 the land ^H776 a desolation ^H8077 and a waste ^H4923, and the pride ^H1347 of her power ^H5797 will be brought ^H7673 to ^H7673 an ^H7673 end ^H7673; and the mountains ^H2022 of Israel ^H3478 will be ^H8074 deserted ^H8074 so ^H4480 that ^H4480 no ^H369 one ^H369 will pass ^H5674 through ^H5674. 29 Then they will know ^H3045 that I am the LORD ^H3068, when I make ^H5414 the land ^H776 a desolation ^H8077 and a waste ^H4923 because ^H5921 of all ^H3605 their abominations ^H8441 which ^H834 they have committed ^H6213.”’

30 “But as for you, son ^H1121 of man ^H120, [fn]your fellow ^H1121 H5971 citizens ^H5971 who talk ^H1696 with one ^H2297 another ^H259 about you by the walls ^H7023 and in the doorways ^H6607 of the houses ^H1004, speak ^H1696 one ^H2297 with another ^H259, each ^H376 with his brother ^H251, saying ^H559, ‘Come ^H935 now ^H4994 and hear ^H8085 what ^H4100 the [fn]message ^H1697 is that comes ^H3318 from the LORD ^H3068.’ 31 And they come ^H935 to you as people ^H5971 come ^H3996, and sit ^H3427 before ^H6440 you as My people ^H5971 and hear ^H8085 your words ^H1697, but they do not do ^H6213 them; for they do ^H6213 the lustful ^H5690 desires ^H5690 expressed by their mouth ^H6310, and their heart ^H3820 follows ^H1980 H310 their unlawful ^H1215 gain ^H1215. 32 And behold ^H2009, you are to them like a love ^H5690 song ^H7892 by one who has a beautiful ^H3303 voice ^H6963 and plays ^H5059 well ^H3190 on an ^H5059 instrument ^H5059; for they hear ^H8085 your words ^H1697 but they do not practice ^H6213 them. 33 So when it comes ^H935—[fn]as it certainly ^H2009 will—then they will know ^H3045 that a prophet ^H5030 has been ^H1961 among ^H8432 them.”
