Jacob’s Fear of Esau

1 Now as Jacob ^H3290 went ^H1980 on his way ^H1870, the angels ^H4397 of God ^H430 met ^H6293 him.

2 And when ^H834 he saw ^H7200 them, Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559, “This ^H2088 is God’s ^H430 [fn]camp ^H4264.” So he named ^H7121 H8034 that place ^H4725 [fn]Mahanaim ^H4266.

3 Then Jacob ^H3290 sent ^H7971 messengers ^H4397 ahead ^H6440 of himself to his brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215 in the land ^H776 of Seir ^H8165, the [fn]country ^H7704 of Edom ^H123. 4 He commanded ^H6680 them, saying ^H559, “This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 you shall say ^H559 to my lord ^H113 Esau ^H6215: ‘Your servant ^H5650 Jacob ^H3290 says ^H559 the following ^H3541: “I have resided ^H1481 with Laban ^H3837, and stayed ^H309 until ^H5704 now ^H6258; 5 and I have ^H1961 oxen ^H7794, donkeys ^H2543, flocks ^H6629, and male ^H5650 and female ^H8198 servants ^H5650 H8198; and I have sent ^H7971 messengers to tell ^H5046 my lord ^H113, so that I may find ^H4672 favor ^H2580 in your sight ^H5869.”’”

6 And the messengers ^H4397 returned ^H7725 to Jacob ^H3290, saying ^H559, “We came ^H935 to your brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215, and furthermore ^H1571 he is coming ^H1980 to meet ^H7122 you, and four ^H702 hundred ^H3967 men ^H376 are with him.” 7 Then Jacob ^H3290 was ^H3372 greatly ^H3966 afraid ^H3372 and distressed ^H6887; and he divided ^H2673 the people ^H5971 who ^H834 were with him, and the flocks ^H6629, the herds ^H1241, and the camels ^H1581, into two ^H8147 companies ^H4264; 8 for he said ^H559, “If ^H518 Esau ^H6215 comes ^H935 to the one ^H259 company ^H4264 and [fn]attacks ^H5221 it, then the company ^H4264 which is left ^H7604 will escape ^H6413.”

9 Then Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559, “God ^H430 of my father ^H1 Abraham ^H85 and God ^H430 of my father ^H1 Isaac ^H3327, LORD ^H3068, who said ^H559 to me, ‘Return ^H7725 to your country ^H776 and to your relatives ^H4138, and I will [fn]make ^H3190 you prosper ^H3190,’ 10 [fn]I am ^H6994 unworthy ^H6994 of all ^H3605 the [fn]favor ^H2617 and of all ^H3605 the [fn]faithfulness ^H571, which ^H834 You have shown ^H6213 to Your servant ^H5650; for with only my staff ^H4731 I crossed ^H5674 this ^H2088 Jordan ^H3383, and now ^H6258 I have become ^H1961 two ^H8147 companies ^H4264. 11 Save ^H5337 me, please ^H4994, from the hand ^H3027 of my brother ^H251, from the hand ^H3027 of Esau ^H6215; for I fear ^H3372 him, that he will come ^H935 and [fn]attack ^H5221 me and the mothers ^H517 with the children ^H1121. 12 For You said ^H559, ‘I will assuredly ^H3190 [fn]make ^H3190 you prosper ^H3190 and make ^H7760 your [fn]descendants ^H2233 as the sand ^H2344 of the sea ^H3220, which ^H834 is too ^H4480 great ^H7230 to be counted ^H5608.’”

13 So he spent ^H3885 the night ^H3915 there ^H8033. Then he [fn]selected ^H3947 from what [fn]he had ^H935 with him a gift ^H4503 for his brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215: 14 two hundred ^H3967 female ^H5795 goats ^H5795 and twenty ^H6242 male ^H8495 goats ^H8495, two hundred ^H3967 ewes ^H7353 and twenty ^H6242 rams ^H352, 15 thirty ^H7970 milking ^H3243 camels ^H1581 and their colts ^H1121, forty ^H705 cows ^H6510 and ten ^H6235 bulls ^H6499, and twenty ^H6242 female ^H860 donkeys ^H860 and ten ^H6235 male ^H5895 donkeys ^H5895. 16 Then he placed ^H5414 them in the [fn]care ^H3027 of his servants ^H5650, every ^H5739 flock ^H5739 by itself ^H905, and said ^H559 to his servants ^H5650, “Pass ^H5674 on ^H5674 ahead ^H6440 of me, and put ^H7760 a space ^H7305 between ^H996 flocks ^H5739.” 17 And he commanded ^H6680 the [fn]one ^H7223 in ^H7223 front ^H7223, saying ^H559, “When ^H3588 my brother ^H251 Esau ^H6215 meets ^H6298 you and asks ^H7592 you, saying ^H559, ‘To whom ^H4310 do you belong, and where ^H575 are you going ^H1980, and to whom ^H4310 do these ^H428 animals in front ^H6440 of you belong?’ 18 then you shall say ^H559, ‘These belong to your servant ^H5650 Jacob ^H3290; it is a gift ^H4503 sent ^H7971 to my lord ^H113 Esau ^H6215. And behold ^H2009, he also ^H1571 is behind ^H310 us.’” 19 Then he commanded ^H6680 also ^H1571 the second ^H8145 and the third ^H7992, and all ^H3605 those who followed ^H1980 H310 the flocks ^H5739, saying ^H559, “In this ^H2088 way ^H1697 you shall speak ^H1696 to Esau ^H6215 when you find ^H4672 him; 20 and you shall say ^H559, ‘Behold ^H2009, your servant ^H5650 Jacob ^H3290 also ^H1571 is behind ^H310 us.’” For he said ^H559, “I will appease ^H3722 H6440 him with the gift ^H4503 that goes ^H1980 ahead ^H6440 of me. Then afterward ^H310 H3651 I will see ^H7200 his face ^H6440; perhaps ^H194 he will accept ^H5375 H6440 me.” 21 So the gift ^H4503 passed ^H5674 on ^H5674 ahead ^H5921 H6440 of him, while he himself ^H1931 spent ^H3885 that night ^H3915 in the camp ^H4264.

22 Now he got ^H6965 up ^H6965 that same ^H1931 night ^H3915 and took ^H3947 his two ^H8147 wives ^H802, his two ^H8147 female ^H8198 slaves ^H8198, and his eleven ^H259 H6240 children ^H3206, and crossed ^H5674 the shallow ^H4569 place ^H4569 of the Jabbok ^H2999. 23 He took ^H3947 them and sent ^H5674 them across ^H5674 the stream ^H5158. And he sent ^H5674 across ^H5674 whatever ^H834 he had.

Jacob Wrestles

24 Then Jacob ^H3290 was left ^H3498 alone ^H905, and a man ^H376 wrestled ^H79 with him until ^H5704 daybreak ^H7837. 25 When the man saw ^H7200 that he had not prevailed ^H3201 against him, he touched ^H5060 the socket ^H3709 of [fn]Jacob’s hip ^H3409; and the socket ^H3709 of Jacob’s ^H3290 hip ^H3409 was dislocated ^H3363 while he wrestled ^H79 with him. 26 Then he said ^H559, “Let ^H7971 me go ^H7971, for the dawn ^H7837 is breaking ^H5927.” But he said ^H559, “I will not let ^H7971 you go ^H7971 unless ^H3588 H518 you bless ^H1288 me.” 27 So he said ^H559 to him, “What ^H4100 is your name ^H8034?” And he said ^H559, “Jacob ^H3290.” 28 Then he said ^H559, “Your name ^H8034 shall no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 be Jacob ^H3290, but [fn]Israel ^H3478; for you have contended ^H8280 with God ^H430 and with men ^H376, and have prevailed ^H3201.” 29 And Jacob ^H3290 asked ^H7592 him and said ^H559, “Please ^H4994 tell ^H5046 me your name ^H8034.” But he said ^H559, “Why ^H4100 is it that you ask ^H7592 my name ^H8034?” And he blessed ^H1288 him there ^H8033. 30 So Jacob ^H3290 named ^H7121 H8034 the place ^H4725 [fn]Peniel ^H6439, for he said, “I have seen ^H7200 God ^H430 face ^H6440 to face ^H6440, yet my [fn]life ^H5315 has been [fn]spared ^H5337.” 31 Now the sun ^H8121 rose ^H2224 upon him just ^H834 as ^H834 he crossed ^H5674 over ^H5674 Penuel ^H6439, and he was limping ^H6760 on his hip ^H3409. 32 Therefore ^H5921 H3651, to this ^H2088 day ^H3117 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 do not eat ^H398 the tendon ^H1517 of the hip ^H5384 which ^H834 is on the socket ^H3709 of the hip ^H3409, because ^H3588 he touched ^H5060 the socket ^H3709 of Jacob’s ^H3290 hip ^H3409 in the tendon ^H1517 of the hip ^H5384.
