Conquest of Egypt Predicted

1 The word ^H1697 that came ^H1961 to Jeremiah ^H3414 for all ^H3605 the Jews ^H3064 living ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, those who were living ^H3427 in Migdol ^H4024, Tahpanhes ^H8471, Memphis ^H5297, and the land ^H776 of Pathros ^H6624, saying ^H559,

2 “This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 says ^H559: ‘You yourselves ^H859 have seen ^H7200 all ^H3605 the disaster ^H7451 that I have brought ^H935 on Jerusalem ^H3389 and all ^H3605 the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063; and behold ^H2009, this ^H2088 day ^H3117 they are in ruins ^H2723 and no ^H369 one ^H369 lives ^H3427 in them, 3 because ^H4480 H6440 of their wickedness ^H7451 which ^H834 they committed ^H6213 to provoke ^H3707 Me to ^H3707 anger ^H3707 by continuing ^H1980 to burn ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 and to serve ^H5647 other ^H312 gods ^H430 whom ^H834 they had not known ^H3045, neither they, you, nor ^H3808 your fathers ^H1. 4 Yet I sent ^H7971 you all ^H3605 My servants ^H5650 the prophets ^H5030 again ^H7925 and again ^H7971, saying ^H559, “Oh ^H4994, do not do ^H6213 this ^H2088 abominable ^H8441 thing ^H1697 which ^H834 I hate ^H8130.” 5 But they did not listen ^H8085 or incline ^H5186 their ears ^H241 to turn ^H7725 from their wickedness ^H7451, so as not to burn ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 to other ^H312 gods ^H430. 6 Therefore My wrath ^H2534 and My anger ^H639 gushed ^H5413 out ^H5413 and burned ^H1197 in the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and in the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389, so they have become ^H1961 ruins ^H2723 and a desolation ^H8077 as it is this ^H2088 day ^H3117. 7 Now ^H6258 then, this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 God ^H430 of armies ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 says ^H559: “Why ^H4100 are you doing ^H6213 great ^H1419 harm ^H7451 to yourselves ^H5315, to eliminate ^H3772 from yourselves man ^H376 and woman ^H802, child ^H5768 and infant ^H3243 from among ^H8432 Judah ^H3063, leaving ^H3498 yourselves without ^H1115 a remnant ^H7611, 8 provoking ^H3707 Me to ^H3707 anger ^H3707 with the works ^H4639 of your hands ^H3027, burning ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 to other ^H312 gods ^H430 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 where ^H834 H8033 you are entering ^H935 to reside ^H1481, so ^H4616 that ^H4616 you may be eliminated ^H3772 and become ^H1961 a curse ^H7045 and a disgrace ^H2781 among all ^H3605 the nations ^H1471 of the earth ^H776? 9 Have you forgotten ^H7911 the wickedness ^H7451 of your fathers ^H1, the wickedness ^H7451 of the kings ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 and the wickedness ^H7451 of their wives ^H802, your own wickedness ^H7451 and the wickedness ^H7451 of your wives ^H802, which ^H834 they committed ^H6213 in the land ^H776 of Judah ^H3063 and in the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389? 10 Yet they have not become ^H1792 [fn]contrite ^H1792 even to this ^H2088 day ^H3117, nor ^H3808 have they feared ^H3372, nor ^H3808 walked ^H1980 in My Law ^H8451 or My statutes ^H2708, which ^H834 I placed ^H5414 before ^H6440 you and before ^H6440 your fathers ^H1.”’

11 “Therefore ^H3651 this ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 says ^H559: ‘Behold ^H2009, I am going to set ^H7760 My face ^H6440 against you for a disaster ^H7451, even to eliminate ^H3772 all ^H3605 Judah ^H3063. 12 And I will take ^H3947 away the remnant ^H7611 of Judah ^H3063 who ^H834 have set ^H7760 their [fn]minds ^H6440 on entering ^H935 the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 to reside ^H1481 there ^H8033, and they will all ^H3605 [fn]meet ^H8552 their end ^H8552 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714; they will fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719 or meet ^H8552 their end ^H8552 by famine ^H7458. From the small ^H6996 to the great ^H1419, they will die ^H4191 by the sword ^H2719 and famine ^H7458; and they will become ^H1961 a curse ^H7045, an object ^H8047 of ^H8047 horror ^H8047, [fn]an imprecation ^H7045, and a disgrace ^H2781. 13 And I will punish ^H6485 those who live ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, just ^H834 as ^H834 I have punished ^H6485 Jerusalem ^H3389, with the sword ^H2719, with famine ^H7458, and with plague ^H1698. 14 So there will be no ^H3808 survivor ^H6412 or refugee ^H8300 for the remnant ^H7611 of Judah ^H3063 who have entered ^H935 the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 to reside ^H1481 there ^H8033 and then to return ^H7725 to the land ^H776 of Judah ^H3063, to which ^H834 they are [fn]longing ^H5375 H5315 to return ^H7725 to live ^H3427; for none ^H3808 will return ^H7725 except ^H3588 H518 a few refugees ^H6412.’”

15 Then all ^H3605 the men ^H376 who were ^H3045 aware ^H3045 that their wives ^H802 were burning ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 to other ^H312 gods ^H430, along with all ^H3605 the women ^H802 who were standing ^H5975 by, as a large ^H1419 assembly ^H6951, [fn]including all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 who were living ^H3427 in Pathros ^H6624 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, responded ^H6030 to Jeremiah ^H3414, saying ^H559, 16 “As for the [fn]message ^H1697 that you have spoken ^H1696 to us in the name ^H8034 of the LORD ^H3068, we are not going to listen ^H8085 to you! 17 But we will certainly ^H6213 carry ^H6213 out ^H6213 every ^H3605 word ^H1697 that has proceeded ^H3318 from our mouths ^H6310, [fn]by burning ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 to the queen ^H4446 of heaven ^H8064 and pouring ^H5258 out ^H5258 drink ^H5262 offerings ^H5262 to her, just ^H834 as ^H834 we ourselves ^H587, our forefathers ^H1, our kings ^H4428, and our leaders ^H8269 did ^H6213 in the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and in the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389; for then we had ^H7646 plenty ^H7646 of [fn]food ^H3899 and were well ^H2896 off ^H2896 and saw ^H7200 no ^H3808 [fn]misfortune ^H7451. 18 But since ^H4480 H227 we stopped ^H2308 burning ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 to the queen ^H4446 of heaven ^H8064 and pouring ^H5258 out ^H5258 drink ^H5262 offerings ^H5262 to her, we have lacked ^H2637 everything ^H3605, and have met ^H8552 our end ^H8552 by the sword ^H2719 and by famine ^H7458.” 19 “And,” said the women, “when ^H3588 we were burning ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 to the queen ^H4446 of heaven ^H8064 and [fn]pouring ^H5258 out ^H5258 drink ^H5262 offerings ^H5262 to her, was it without ^H4480 H1107 our husbands ^H376 that we made ^H6213 for her sacrificial ^H3561 cakes ^H3561 [fn]in her image ^H6087, and poured ^H5258 out ^H5258 drink ^H5262 offerings ^H5262 to her?”

Disaster for the Jews

20 Then Jeremiah ^H3414 said ^H559 to all ^H3605 the people ^H5971, to the men ^H1397 and women ^H802—even to all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 who were giving ^H6030 him such an answer ^H1697 H6030—saying ^H559,

21 “As for the [fn]smoking ^H7002 sacrifices ^H7002 that you burned ^H6999 in the cities ^H5892 of Judah ^H3063 and in the streets ^H2351 of Jerusalem ^H3389, you and your forefathers ^H1, your kings ^H4428 and your leaders ^H8269, and the people ^H5971 of the land ^H776, did the LORD ^H3068 not remember ^H2142 them, and did all of this not come ^H5927 into His [fn]mind ^H3820? 22 So the LORD ^H3068 was ^H3201 no ^H3808 longer ^H5750 able ^H3201 to endure ^H5375 it, because ^H4480 H6440 of the evil ^H7455 of your deeds ^H4611, because ^H4480 H6440 of the abominations ^H8441 which ^H834 you have committed ^H6213; so your land ^H776 has become ^H1961 a place ^H2723 of ^H2723 ruins ^H2723, an object ^H8047 of ^H8047 horror ^H8047, and a curse ^H7045, without ^H369 an inhabitant ^H3427, as it is this ^H2088 day ^H3117. 23 Since ^H4480 H6440 you have burned ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 and have sinned ^H2398 against the LORD ^H3068 and not obeyed ^H8085 the voice ^H6963 of the LORD ^H3068 nor walked ^H1980 in His Law ^H8451, His statutes ^H2708, or His testimonies ^H5715, therefore ^H5921 H3651 this ^H2088 disaster ^H7451 has happened ^H7122 to you, as it has this ^H2088 day ^H3117.”

24 Then Jeremiah ^H3414 said ^H559 to all ^H3605 the people ^H5971, including all ^H3605 the women ^H802, “Hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068, all ^H3605 Judah ^H3063 who ^H834 are in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714! 25 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 of armies ^H6635, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478 [fn]says ^H559: ‘As for you and your wives ^H802, you have spoken ^H1696 with your mouths ^H6310 and fulfilled ^H4390 it with your hands ^H3027, saying ^H559, “We will certainly ^H6213 perform ^H6213 our vows ^H5088 that we have vowed ^H5087, to burn ^H6999 [fn]sacrifices ^H6999 to the queen ^H4446 of heaven ^H8064 and pour ^H5258 out ^H5258 drink ^H5262 offerings ^H5262 to her.” By ^H6965 all ^H6965 means ^H6965 fulfill ^H6965 your vows ^H5088, and be ^H6213 sure ^H6213 to perform ^H6213 your vows ^H5088!’ 26 [fn]In ^H3651 return ^H3651, hear ^H8085 the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068, all ^H3605 Judah ^H3063 who are living ^H3427 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714: ‘Behold ^H2009, I have sworn ^H7650 by My great ^H1419 name ^H8034,’ says ^H559 the LORD ^H3068, ‘that My name ^H8034 shall never ^H518 be invoked ^H2142 again ^H5750 by the mouth ^H6310 of anyone ^H3605 H376 of Judah ^H3063 in all ^H3605 the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714, saying ^H559, “As the Lord ^H136 [fn]GOD ^H3068 lives ^H2416.” 27 Behold ^H2009, I am watching ^H8245 over ^H5921 them for harm ^H7451 and not for good ^H2896, and all ^H3605 the people ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 who ^H834 are in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 will [fn]meet ^H8552 their end ^H8552 by the sword ^H2719 or by famine ^H7458 until ^H5704 they [fn]are completely ^H3615 gone ^H3615. 28 Those who ^H6412 escape ^H6412 the sword ^H2719 will return ^H7725 from the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 to the land ^H776 of Judah ^H3063 [fn]few ^H4962 in number ^H4557. Then all ^H3605 the remnant ^H7611 of Judah ^H3063 who have gone ^H935 to the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714 to reside ^H1481 there ^H8033 will know ^H3045 whose ^H4310 word ^H1697 will stand ^H6965, Mine ^H4480 or theirs ^H4480 H1992. 29 And this ^H2088 will be the sign ^H226 to you,’ declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, ‘that I am going to punish ^H6485 you in this ^H2088 place ^H4725, so ^H4616 that ^H4616 you may know ^H3045 that My words ^H1697 will assuredly ^H6965 stand ^H6965 against ^H5921 you for harm ^H7451.’ 30 This ^H3541 is ^H3541 what ^H3541 the LORD ^H3068 says ^H559: ‘Behold ^H2009, I am going to hand ^H5414 H3027 Pharaoh ^H6548 Hophra ^H6548 king ^H4428 of Egypt ^H4714 over ^H5414 to his enemies ^H340, to those who seek ^H1245 his life ^H5315, just ^H834 as ^H834 I handed ^H5414 H3027 Zedekiah ^H6667 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 over ^H5414 to Nebuchadnezzar ^H5019 king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894, who was his enemy ^H340 and was seeking ^H1245 his life ^H5315.’”
