The People Complain
1 Now the people H5971 became H1961 like those who complain H596 of adversity H7451 in the ears H241 of the LORD H3068; and the LORD H3068 heard H8085 them and His anger H639 was kindled H2734, and the fire H784 of the LORD H3068 burned H1197 among them and consumed H398 some at the outskirts H7097 of the camp H4264.
2 The people H5971 then cried H6817 out H6817 to Moses H4872; and Moses H4872 prayed H6419 to the LORD H3068, and the fire H784 [fn]died H8257 out H8257. 3 So that place H4725 was named H7121 H8034 [fn]Taberah H8404, because H3588 the fire H784 of the LORD H3068 burned H1197 among them.
4 Now the rabble H628 who H834 were among H7130 them [fn]had H183 greedy H183 cravings H8378; and the sons H1121 of Israel H3478 also H1571 wept H1058 again H7725 and said H559, “Who H4310 will give us [fn]meat H1320 to eat H398? 5 We remember H2142 the fish H1710 which H834 we used to eat H398 for H2600 free H2600 in Egypt H4714, the cucumbers H7180, the melons H20, the leeks H2682, the onions H1211, and the garlic H7762; 6 but now H6258 our [fn]appetite H5315 is gone H3002. There H369 is H369 nothing H369 at all H3605 [fn]to look H5869 at except H1115 this manna H4478!”
7 Now the manna H4478 was like coriander H1407 seed H2233, and its appearance H5869 like that of [fn]bdellium H916. 8 The people H5971 would roam H7751 about H7751 and gather H3950 it and grind H2912 it [fn]between two millstones H7347, or H176 pound H1743 it in the mortar H4085, and boil H1310 it in the pot H6517 and make H6213 loaves H5692 with it; and its taste H2940 was like the taste H2940 of [fn]cake H3955 baked with oil H8081. 9 When the dew H2919 came H3381 down H3381 on the camp H4264 at night H3915, the manna H4478 would come H3381 down H3381 [fn]with it.
The Complaint of Moses
10 Now Moses H4872 heard H8085 the people H5971 weeping H1058 throughout their families H4940, each H376 one H376 at the entrance H6607 of his tent H168; and the anger H639 of the LORD H3068 became H2734 very H3966 hot H2734, and [fn]Moses H4872 was displeased H7489 H5869.
11 So Moses H4872 said H559 to the LORD H3068, “Why H4100 have You [fn]been H7489 so hard H7489 on Your servant H5650? And why H4100 have I not found H4672 favor H2580 in Your sight H5869, that You have put H7760 the burden H4853 of all H3605 this H2088 people H5971 on me? 12 Was it I who conceived H2029 all H3605 this H2088 people H5971? Or did I give H3205 birth H3205 to them, that You should say H559 to me, ‘Carry H5375 them [fn]in your arms H2436, as a [fn]nurse H539 carries H5375 a nursing H3243 infant H3243, to the land H127 which H834 You swore H7650 to their fathers H1’? 13 Where H4480 H370 am I to get meat H1320 to give H5414 to all H3605 this H2088 people H5971? For they weep H1058 before H5921 me, saying H559, ‘Give H5414 us meat H1320 so that we may eat H398!’ 14 I am H3201 not able H3201 to carry H5375 all H3605 this H2088 people H5971 by myself H905, because H3588 it is too H4480 [fn]burdensome H3515 for me. 15 So if H518 You are going to deal H6213 with me this H3602 way H3602, please H4994 kill H2026 me now H2026, if H518 I have found H4672 favor H2580 in Your sight H5869, and do not let me see H7200 my misery H7451.”
Seventy Elders to Assist Moses
16 The LORD H3068 therefore said H559 to Moses H4872, “Gather H622 for Me seventy H7657 men H376 from the elders H2205 of Israel H3478, whom H834 you know H3045 to be the elders H2205 of the people H5971 and their officers H7860, and bring H3947 them to the tent H168 of meeting H4150, and have them take H3320 their stand H3320 there H8033 with you.
17 Then I will come H3381 down H3381 and speak H1696 with you there H8033, and I will take H680 away H680 some H4480 of the Spirit H7307 who H834 is upon you, and put H7760 Him upon them; and they shall bear H5375 the burden H4853 of the people H5971 with you, so that you will not bear H5375 it by H905 yourself H905. 18 And you shall say H559 to the people H5971, ‘Consecrate H6942 yourselves for tomorrow H4279, and you shall eat H398 meat H1320; for you have wept H1058 in the ears H241 of the LORD H3068, saying H559, “[fn]Oh H4310 that someone H4310 would give us meat H1320 to eat H398! For we were well-off H2895 in Egypt H4714.” Therefore the LORD H3068 will give H5414 you meat H1320 and you shall eat H398. 19 You shall eat H398, not one H259 day H3117, nor H3808 two days H3117, nor H3808 five H2568 days H3117, nor H3808 ten H6235 days H3117, nor H3808 twenty H6242 days H3117, 20 [fn]but for a whole H3117 month H2320, until H5704 H834 it comes H3318 out H3318 of your nose H639 and [fn]makes H1961 you nauseated H2214; because H3282 H3588 you have rejected H3988 the LORD H3068 who H834 is among H7130 you and have wept H1058 before H6440 Him, saying H559, “Why H4100 did we ever H2088 leave H3318 H4480 Egypt H4714?”’” 21 But Moses H4872 said H559, “The people H5971, among H7130 whom H834 I am included, are six H8337 hundred H3967 thousand H505 on foot H7273! Yet You have said H559, ‘I will give H5414 them meat H1320, so that they may eat H398 for a whole H3117 month H2320.’ 22 Are flocks H6629 and herds H1241 to be slaughtered H7819 for them, so that it will be H4672 sufficient H4672 for them? Or H518 are all H3605 the fish H1709 of the sea H3220 to be [fn]caught H622 for them, so that it will be H4672 sufficient H4672 for them?” 23 Then the LORD H3068 said H559 to Moses H4872, “Is the LORD’S H3068 [fn]power H3027 too H7114 little H7114? Now H6258 you shall see H7200 whether My word H1697 will [fn]come H7136 true H7136 for you or H518 not.”
24 So Moses H4872 went H3318 out H3318 and told H1696 the people H5971 the words H1697 of the LORD H3068. He also gathered H622 seventy H7657 men H376 of the elders H2205 of the people H5971, and positioned H5975 them around H5439 the tent H168. 25 Then the LORD H3068 came H3381 down H3381 in the cloud H6051 and spoke H1696 to him; and He took H680 away H680 some H4480 of the Spirit H7307 who H834 was upon him and placed H5414 Him upon the seventy H7657 elders H376 H2205. And when the Spirit H7307 rested H5117 upon them, they prophesied H5012. Yet they did not do H3254 it again H3254.
26 But two H8147 men H376 had remained H7604 in the camp H4264; the name H8034 of the one H259 was Eldad H419, and the name H8034 of the [fn]other H8145, Medad H4312. And the Spirit H7307 rested H5117 upon them (and they were among those who had been registered H3789, but had not gone H3318 out H3318 to the tent H168), and they prophesied H5012 in the camp H4264. 27 So a young H5288 man H5288 ran H7323 and informed H5046 Moses H4872, and said H559, “Eldad H419 and Medad H4312 are prophesying H5012 in the camp H4264.” 28 Then Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126, the personal H8334 servant H8334 of Moses H4872 from his youth H979, responded H6030 and said H559, “My lord H113 Moses H4872, restrain H3607 them!” 29 But Moses H4872 said H559 to him, “Are H7065 you jealous H7065 for my sake? If H4310 H5414 only H4310 H5414 all H3605 the LORD’S H3068 people H5971 were prophets H5030, that the LORD H3068 would put H5414 His Spirit H7307 upon them!” 30 Then Moses H4872 [fn]returned H622 to the camp H4264, both he and the elders H2205 of Israel H3478.
The Quail and the Plague
31 Now a wind H7307 burst H5265 forth H5265 from the LORD H3068 and it brought H1468 quail H7958 from the sea H3220, and dropped H5203 them beside H5921 the camp H4264, about a day’s H3117 journey H1870 on this H3541 side and a day’s H3117 journey H1870 on the other H3541 side all H5439 around H5439 the camp H4264, and about [fn]two cubits H520 deep on the surface H6440 of the ground H776.
32 And the people H5971 [fn]spent H6965 all H3605 that day H3117, all H3605 night H3915, and all H3605 the next H4283 day H3117, and they gathered H622 the quail H7958 (the one who gathered H4591 least H4591 gathered H622 [fn]ten H6235 homers H2563) and spread H7849 them out H7849 for themselves all H5439 around H5439 the camp H4264. 33 While the meat H1320 was still H5750 between H996 their teeth H8127, before H2962 it was chewed H3772, the anger H639 of the LORD H3068 was kindled H2734 against the people H5971, and the LORD H3068 struck H5221 the people H5971 with a very H3966 severe H7227 plague H4347. 34 So that place H4725 was named H7121 H8034 [fn]Kibroth-hattaavah H6914, because H3588 there H8033 they buried H6912 the people H5971 who had been H183 greedy H183. 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah H6914 the people H5971 set H5265 out H5265 for Hazeroth H2698, and they [fn]remained H1961 at Hazeroth H2698.
