The People Rebel

1 Then all ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712 [fn]raised ^H5375 their voices ^H6963 and cried ^H5414 out ^H5414, and the people ^H5971 wept ^H1058 [fn]that night ^H3915.

2 And all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 grumbled ^H3885 against ^H5921 Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175; and the entire ^H3605 congregation ^H5712 said ^H559 to them, “If ^H3863 only ^H3863 we had died ^H4191 in the land ^H776 of Egypt ^H4714! Or ^H176 even if ^H3863 we had died ^H4191 in this ^H2088 wilderness ^H4057! 3 So why ^H4100 is the LORD ^H3068 bringing ^H935 us into this ^H2088 land ^H776 to fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719? Our wives ^H802 and our little ^H2945 ones ^H2945 will become ^H1961 plunder ^H957! Would it not be better ^H2896 for us to return ^H7725 to Egypt ^H4714?” 4 So they said ^H559 to one ^H376 another ^H251, “Let’s appoint ^H5414 a leader ^H7218 and return ^H7725 to Egypt ^H4714!”

5 Then Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175 fell ^H5307 on their faces ^H6440 in the presence ^H6440 of all ^H3605 the assembly ^H6951 of the congregation ^H5712 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478. 6 And Joshua ^H3091 the son ^H1121 of Nun ^H5126 and Caleb ^H3612 the son ^H1121 of Jephunneh ^H3312, of those who had spied ^H8446 out ^H8446 the land ^H776, tore ^H7167 their clothes ^H899; 7 and they spoke ^H559 to all ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, saying ^H559, “The land ^H776 which ^H834 we passed ^H5674 through to spy ^H8446 out ^H8446 is an exceedingly ^H3966 good ^H2896 land ^H776. 8 If ^H518 the LORD ^H3068 is pleased ^H2654 with us, then He will bring ^H935 us into this ^H2088 land ^H776 and give ^H5414 it to us—a land ^H776 which ^H834 flows ^H2100 with milk ^H2461 and honey ^H1706. 9 Only ^H389 do not rebel ^H4775 against the LORD ^H3068; and do not fear ^H3372 the people ^H5971 of the land ^H776, for they will be our [fn]prey ^H3899. Their [fn]protection ^H6738 is gone ^H5493 from them, and the LORD ^H3068 is with us; do not fear ^H3372 them.” 10 But all ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712 said ^H559 to stone ^H7275 them with stones ^H68. Then the glory ^H3519 of the LORD ^H3068 appeared ^H7200 in the tent ^H168 of meeting ^H4150 to all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478.

Moses Pleads for the People

11 And the LORD ^H3068 said ^H559 to Moses ^H4872, “How ^H575 long ^H5704 will this ^H2088 people ^H5971 be ^H5006 disrespectful ^H5006 to Me? And how ^H575 long ^H5704 will they not [fn]believe ^H539 in Me, despite all ^H3605 the signs ^H226 that I have performed ^H6213 in their midst ^H7130?

12 I will strike ^H5221 them with [fn]plague ^H1698 and dispossess ^H3423 them, and I will make ^H6213 you into a nation ^H1471 greater ^H1419 and mightier ^H6099 than ^H4480 they.”

13 But Moses ^H4872 said ^H559 to the LORD ^H3068, “Then the Egyptians ^H4714 will hear ^H8085 of it, for by Your strength ^H3581 You brought ^H5927 this ^H2088 people ^H5971 up ^H5927 from their midst ^H7130, 14 and they will tell ^H559 it to the inhabitants ^H3427 of this ^H2088 land ^H776. They have heard ^H8085 that You, LORD ^H3068, are in the midst ^H7130 of this ^H2088 people ^H5971, because ^H834 You, LORD ^H3068, are seen ^H7200 eye ^H5869 to eye ^H5869, while Your cloud ^H6051 stands ^H5975 over ^H5921 them; and You go ^H1980 before ^H6440 them in a pillar ^H5982 of cloud ^H6051 by day ^H3119, and in a pillar ^H5982 of fire ^H784 by night ^H3915. 15 Now if You put ^H4191 this ^H2088 people ^H5971 to ^H4191 death ^H4191 [fn]all ^H376 at once ^H259, then the nations ^H1471 who ^H834 have heard ^H8085 of Your fame ^H8088 will [fn]say ^H559, 16 ‘Since ^H4480 the LORD ^H3068 could ^H3201 not bring ^H935 this ^H2088 people ^H5971 into the land ^H776 which ^H834 He promised ^H7650 them by ^H7650 oath ^H7650, He slaughtered ^H7819 them in the wilderness ^H4057.’ 17 So now ^H6258, please ^H4994, let the power ^H3581 of the Lord ^H136 be ^H1431 great ^H1431, just ^H834 as ^H834 You have declared ^H1696, saying ^H559, 18 ‘The LORD ^H3068 is slow ^H750 to anger ^H639 and abundant ^H7227 in mercy ^H2617, forgiving ^H5375 wrongdoing ^H5771 and violation ^H6588 of His Law; but He will by ^H5352 no ^H3808 means ^H5352 leave ^H5352 the guilty unpunished ^H5352, inflicting ^H6485 the [fn]punishment ^H5771 of the fathers ^H1 on the children ^H1121 [fn]to the third ^H8029 and the fourth ^H7256 generations.’ 19 Please ^H4994 forgive ^H5545 the guilt ^H5771 of this ^H2088 people ^H5971 in accordance with the greatness ^H1433 of Your mercy ^H2617, just ^H834 as ^H834 You also have forgiven ^H5375 this ^H2088 people ^H5971, from Egypt ^H4714 even until ^H5704 now ^H2008.”

The LORD Pardons and Rebukes

20 So the LORD ^H3068 said ^H559, “I have forgiven ^H5545 them in accordance with your word ^H1697;

21 however ^H199, as I live ^H2416, [fn]all ^H3605 the earth ^H776 will be filled ^H4390 with the glory ^H3519 of the LORD ^H3068. 22 Certainly ^H3588 all ^H3605 the people ^H376 who have seen ^H7200 My glory ^H3519 and My signs ^H226 which ^H834 I performed ^H6213 in Egypt ^H4714 and in the wilderness ^H4057, yet have put ^H5254 Me to ^H5254 the ^H5254 test ^H5254 these ^H2088 ten ^H6235 times ^H6471 and have not listened ^H8085 to My voice ^H6963, 23 shall by no ^H518 means ^H518 see ^H7200 the land ^H776 which ^H834 I swore ^H7650 to their fathers ^H1, nor ^H3808 shall any ^H3605 of those who were ^H5006 disrespectful ^H5006 to Me see ^H7200 it. 24 But as for My servant ^H5650 Caleb ^H3612, because ^H6118 he has had ^H1961 H5973 a different ^H312 spirit ^H7307 and has followed ^H310 Me fully ^H4390, I will bring ^H935 him into the land ^H776 which ^H834 he [fn]entered ^H935, and his [fn]descendants ^H2233 shall take ^H3423 possession ^H3423 of it. 25 Now the Amalekites ^H6003 and the Canaanites ^H3669 live ^H3427 in the valleys ^H6010; turn ^H6437 tomorrow ^H4279 and set ^H5265 out ^H5265 for the wilderness ^H4057 by the way ^H1870 of the [fn]Red ^H5488 Sea ^H3220.”

26 The LORD ^H3068 spoke ^H1696 to Moses ^H4872 and Aaron ^H175 again, saying ^H559, 27 “How ^H4970 long ^H5704 H4970 shall I put up with this ^H2088 evil ^H7451 congregation ^H5712 who ^H834 are grumbling ^H3885 against ^H5921 Me? I have heard ^H8085 the complaints ^H8519 of the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 which ^H834 they are [fn]voicing ^H3885 against ^H5921 Me. 28 Say ^H559 to them, ‘As I live ^H2416,’ declares ^H5002 the LORD ^H3068, ‘just ^H834 as ^H834 you have spoken ^H1696 in My hearing ^H241, so ^H3651 I will do ^H6213 to you; 29 your dead ^H6297 bodies ^H6297 will fall ^H5307 in this ^H2088 wilderness ^H4057, all ^H3605 your [fn]numbered ^H6485 men according to your complete ^H3605 number ^H4557 from twenty ^H6242 years ^H8141 old ^H1121 and upward ^H4605, who ^H834 have grumbled ^H3885 against ^H5921 Me. 30 By no ^H518 means ^H518 will you come ^H935 into the land ^H776 where ^H834 I [fn]swore ^H5375 H3027 to settle ^H7931 you, except ^H3588 H518 for Caleb ^H3612 the son ^H1121 of Jephunneh ^H3312 and Joshua ^H3091 the son ^H1121 of Nun ^H5126. 31 Your children ^H2945, however, whom ^H834 you said ^H559 would become ^H1961 plunder ^H957—I will bring ^H935 them in ^H935, and they will know ^H3045 the land ^H776 which ^H834 you have rejected ^H3988. 32 But as for you, your dead ^H6297 bodies ^H6297 will fall ^H5307 in this ^H2088 wilderness ^H4057. 33 Also, your sons ^H1121 will be shepherds ^H7462 in the wilderness ^H4057 for forty ^H705 years ^H8141, and they will [fn]suffer ^H5375 for your unfaithfulness ^H2184, until ^H5704 your bodies ^H6297 perish ^H8552 in the wilderness ^H4057. 34 In accordance with the number ^H4557 of days ^H3117 that you spied ^H8446 out ^H8446 the land ^H776, forty ^H705 days ^H3117, for every ^H3117 day ^H3117 you shall suffer ^H5375 the punishment ^H5771 for ^H5771 your [fn]guilt ^H5771 a year ^H8141, that is, forty ^H705 years ^H8141, and you will know ^H3045 My opposition ^H8569. 35 I, the LORD ^H3068, have spoken ^H1696, I certainly ^H518 H3808 will do ^H6213 this ^H2088 to all ^H3605 this ^H2088 evil ^H7451 congregation ^H5712 who are gathered ^H3259 together ^H3259 against ^H5921 Me. They shall be ^H8552 worn ^H8552 out ^H8552 in this ^H2088 wilderness ^H4057, and there ^H8033 they shall die ^H4191.’”

36 As for the men ^H376 whom ^H834 Moses ^H4872 sent ^H7971 to spy ^H8446 out ^H8446 the land ^H776, and who returned ^H7725 and led all ^H3605 the congregation ^H5712 to grumble ^H3885 against ^H5921 him by bringing ^H3318 a bad ^H1681 report ^H1681 about ^H5921 the land ^H776, 37 those men ^H376 who brought ^H3318 the bad ^H7451 report ^H1681 of the land ^H776 also died ^H4191 by a plague ^H4046 in the presence ^H6440 of the LORD ^H3068. 38 But Joshua ^H3091 the son ^H1121 of Nun ^H5126 and Caleb ^H3612 the son ^H1121 of Jephunneh ^H3312 remained ^H2421 alive ^H2421 out of those ^H1992 men ^H376 who went ^H1980 to spy ^H8446 out ^H8446 the land ^H776.

Israel Repulsed

39 Now when Moses ^H4872 spoke ^H1696 these ^H428 words ^H1697 to all ^H3605 the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478, the people ^H5971 mourned ^H56 greatly ^H3966.

40 In the morning ^H1242, however, they got ^H7925 up ^H7925 early ^H7925 and went ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the [fn]ridge ^H7218 of the hill ^H2022 country ^H2022, saying ^H559, “Here ^H2009 we are; and we will go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the place ^H4725 which ^H834 the LORD ^H3068 has [fn]promised ^H559, for [fn]we have sinned ^H2398.” 41 But Moses ^H4872 said ^H559, “Why ^H4100 then ^H2088 are you violating ^H5674 the [fn]command ^H6310 of the LORD ^H3068, when doing so will not succeed ^H6743? 42 Do not go ^H5927 up ^H5927, for the LORD ^H3068 is not among ^H7130 you, [fn]to prevent ^H3808 you from being defeated ^H5062 [fn]by your enemies ^H340. 43 For the Amalekites ^H6003 and the Canaanites ^H3669 will be there ^H8033 [fn]to confront ^H6440 you, and you will fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719, since ^{H3588 H5921 H3651} you have turned ^H7725 back ^H7725 from following ^H310 the LORD ^H3068. And the LORD ^H3068 will not be with you.” 44 But they foolishly dared ^H6075 to go ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the [fn]ridge ^H7218 of the hill ^H2022 country ^H2022; neither ^H3808 the ark ^H727 of the covenant ^H1285 of the LORD ^H3068 nor ^H3808 Moses ^H4872 left ^H4185 the camp ^H4264. 45 Then the Amalekites ^H6003 and the Canaanites ^H3669 who lived ^H3427 in that hill ^H2022 country ^H2022 came ^H3381 down ^H3381, and struck ^H5221 them and scattered ^H3807 them as far ^H5704 as Hormah ^H2767.
