Reconciliation with God

1 Now while Ezra ^H5830 was praying ^H6419 and making ^H3034 confession ^H3034, weeping ^H1058 and prostrating ^H5307 himself before ^H6440 the house ^H1004 of God ^H430, a very ^H3966 large ^H7227 assembly ^H6951, men ^H376, women ^H802, and children ^H3206, gathered ^H6908 to him from Israel ^H3478; for the people ^H5971 wept ^H1058 greatly ^H7235 H1059.

2 Shecaniah ^H7935 the son ^H1121 of Jehiel ^H3171, one of the sons ^H1121 of Elam ^H5867, said ^H559 to Ezra ^H5830, “We have been ^H4603 unfaithful ^H4603 to our God ^H430 and have [fn]married ^H3427 foreign ^H5237 women ^H802 from the peoples ^H5971 of the land ^H776; yet now ^H6258 there ^H3426 is ^H3426 hope ^H4723 for Israel ^H3478 in ^H5921 spite ^H5921 of ^H5921 this ^H2088. 3 So now ^H6258 let’s make ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with our God ^H430 to send ^H3318 away ^H3318 all ^H3605 the wives ^H802 and [fn]their children ^H3205, following the counsel ^H6098 of [fn]my lord ^H136 and of those who fear ^H2730 the commandment ^H4687 of our God ^H430; and let it be done ^H6213 according to the Law ^H8451. 4 Arise ^H6965! For this matter ^H1697 is [fn]your responsibility ^H5921, but we will be with you; be ^H2388 courageous ^H2388 and act ^H6213.”

5 Then Ezra ^H5830 stood ^H6965 and made the leading ^H8269 priests ^H3548, the Levites ^H3881, and all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 take ^H7650 an ^H7650 oath ^H7650 that they would do ^H6213 according to this ^H2088 [fn]proposal ^H1697; so they took ^H7650 the ^H7650 oath ^H7650. 6 Then Ezra ^H5830 rose ^H6965 from before ^H4480 H6440 the house ^H1004 of God ^H430 and went ^H1980 into the chamber ^H3957 of Jehohanan ^H3076 the son ^H1121 of Eliashib ^H475. Although he went ^H1980 there ^H8033, he did not eat ^H398 bread ^H3899 nor ^H3808 drink ^H8354 water ^H4325, because ^H3588 he was mourning ^H56 over ^H5921 the unfaithfulness ^H4604 of the exiles ^H1473. 7 So they made ^H5674 a proclamation ^H6963 throughout Judah ^H3063 and Jerusalem ^H3389 to all ^H3605 the exiles ^H1121 H1473, that they were to assemble ^H6908 at Jerusalem ^H3389, 8 and that whoever ^H3605 H834 did not come ^H935 within three ^H7969 days ^H3117, in accordance with the counsel ^H6098 of the leaders ^H8269 and the elders ^H2205, all ^H3605 his property ^H7399 would be forfeited ^H2763, and he himself ^H1931 would be excluded ^H914 from the assembly ^H6951 of the exiles ^H1473.

9 So all ^H3605 the men ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 and Benjamin ^H1144 assembled ^H6908 at Jerusalem ^H3389 within the three ^H7969 days ^H3117. It was the ninth ^H8671 month ^H2320 on the twentieth ^H6242 of the month ^H2320, and all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 sat ^H3427 in the public ^H7339 square ^H7339 before the house ^H1004 of God ^H430, trembling ^H7460 because ^H5921 of this matter ^H1697 and the heavy rain ^H1653. 10 Then Ezra ^H5830 the priest ^H3548 stood ^H6965 up ^H6965 and said ^H559 to them, “You have been ^H4603 unfaithful ^H4603 and have married ^H3427 foreign ^H5237 wives ^H802, adding ^H3254 to the guilt ^H819 of Israel ^H3478. 11 Now ^H6258 therefore, make ^H5414 confession ^H8426 to the LORD ^H3068 God ^H430 of your fathers ^H1 and do ^H6213 His will ^H7522; and separate ^H914 yourselves from the peoples ^H5971 of the land ^H776 and from the foreign ^H5237 wives ^H802.” 12 Then all ^H3605 the assembly ^H6951 replied ^H6030 with a loud ^H1419 voice ^H6963, “It is [fn]our duty ^H5921 to do ^H6213 exactly ^H3651 as you have said ^H1697! 13 However ^H61, there are many ^H7227 people ^H5971, it is the rainy ^H1653 season ^H6256, and we are not able ^H3581 to stand ^H5975 in the open ^H2351. Nor ^H3808 can the task ^H4399 be done in one ^H259 or two ^H8147 days ^H3117, because ^H3588 we have done ^H6586 a great ^H7235 wrong ^H6586 in this ^H2088 matter ^H1697. 14 Please ^H4994 let our leaders ^H8269 [fn]represent ^H5975 all ^H3605 the assembly ^H6951 and have all ^H3605 those in our cities ^H5892 who have married ^H3427 foreign ^H5237 wives ^H802 come ^H935 at appointed ^H2163 times ^H6256, together ^H5973 with ^H5973 the elders ^H2205 and judges ^H8199 of each ^H5892 city ^H5892, until ^H5704 the fierce ^H2740 anger ^H639 of our God ^H430 on ^H5704 account ^H5704 of ^H5704 this ^H2088 matter ^H1697 is turned ^H7725 away ^H7725 from us.” 15 Only ^H389 Jonathan ^H3083 the son ^H1121 of Asahel ^H6214 and Jahzeiah ^H3167 the son ^H1121 of Tikvah ^H8616 [fn]opposed ^H5975 H5921 this ^H2088, with Meshullam ^H4918 and Shabbethai ^H7678 the Levite ^H3881 supporting ^H5826 them.

16 But the exiles ^H1121 H1473 did ^H6213 so ^H3651. And [fn]Ezra ^H5830 the priest ^H3548 selected ^H914 men ^H376 who were the heads ^H7218 of fathers’ ^H1 households for each of their father’s ^H1 households ^H1004, all ^H3605 of them by name ^H8034. So they [fn]convened ^H3427 on the first ^H259 day ^H3117 of the tenth ^H6224 month ^H2320 to investigate ^H1875 the matter ^H1697. 17 And they finished ^H3615 investigating all ^H3605 the men ^H376 who had married ^H3427 foreign ^H5237 wives ^H802 by the first ^H259 day ^H3117 of the first ^H7223 month ^H2320.

19 They [fn]pledged ^H5414 H3027 to send ^H3318 away ^H3318 their wives ^H802, and being guilty ^H818, they offered a ram ^H352 of the flock ^H6629 for their guilt ^H818. 20 Of the sons ^H1121 of Immer ^H564, there were Hanani ^H2607 and Zebadiah ^H2069; 21 and of the sons ^H1121 of Harim ^H2766: Maaseiah ^H4641, Elijah ^H452, Shemaiah ^H8098, Jehiel ^H3171, and Uzziah ^H5818; 22 and of the sons ^H1121 of Pashhur ^H6583: Elioenai ^H454, Maaseiah ^H4641, Ishmael ^H3458, Nethanel ^H5417, Jozabad ^H3107, and Elasah ^H501.

23 Of the Levites ^H3881 there were Jozabad ^H3107, Shimei ^H8096, Kelaiah ^H7041 (that is, Kelita ^H7042), Pethahiah ^H6611, Judah ^H3063, and Eliezer ^H461.

24 Of the singers ^H7891 there was Eliashib ^H475; and of the gatekeepers ^H7778: Shallum ^H7967, Telem ^H2928, and Uri ^H221.

25 Of Israel ^H3478, of the sons ^H1121 of Parosh ^H6551 there were Ramiah ^H7422, Izziah ^H3150, Malchijah ^H4441, Mijamin ^H4326, Eleazar ^H499, Malchijah ^H4441, and Benaiah ^H1141; 26 and of the sons ^H1121 of Elam ^H5867: Mattaniah ^H4983, Zechariah ^H2148, Jehiel ^H3171, Abdi ^H5660, Jeremoth ^H3406, and Elijah ^H452; 27 and of the sons ^H1121 of Zattu ^H2240: Elioenai ^H454, Eliashib ^H475, Mattaniah ^H4983, Jeremoth ^H3406, Zabad ^H2066, and Aziza ^H5819; 28 and of the sons ^H1121 of Bebai ^H893: Jehohanan ^H3076, Hananiah ^H2608, Zabbai ^H2079, and Athlai ^H6271; 29 and of the sons ^H1121 of Bani ^H1137: Meshullam ^H4918, Malluch ^H4409 and Adaiah ^H5718, Jashub ^H3437, Sheal ^H7594, and Jeremoth ^H3406; 30 and of the sons ^H1121 of Pahath-moab ^H6355: Adna ^H5733 and Chelal ^H3636, Benaiah ^H1141, Maaseiah ^H4641, Mattaniah ^H4983, Bezalel ^H1212, Binnui ^H1131, and Manasseh ^H4519; 31 and of the sons ^H1121 of Harim ^H2766: Eliezer ^H461, Isshijah ^H3449, Malchijah ^H4441, Shemaiah ^H8098, Shimeon ^H8095, 32 Benjamin ^H1144, Malluch ^H4409, and Shemariah ^H8114; 33 of the sons ^H1121 of Hashum ^H2828: Mattenai ^H4982, Mattattah ^H4992, Zabad ^H2066, Eliphelet ^H467, Jeremai ^H3413, Manasseh ^H4519, and Shimei ^H8096; 34 of the sons ^H1121 of Bani ^H1137: Maadai ^H4572, Amram ^H6019, Uel ^H177, 35 Benaiah ^H1141, Bedeiah ^H912, Cheluhi ^H3622, 36 Vaniah ^H2057, Meremoth ^H4822, Eliashib ^H475, 37 Mattaniah ^H4983, Mattenai ^H4982, Jaasu ^H3299, 38 Bani ^H1137, Binnui ^H1131, Shimei ^H8096, 39 Shelemiah ^H8018, Nathan ^H5416, Adaiah ^H5718, 40 Machnadebai ^H4367, Shashai ^H8343, Sharai ^H8298, 41 Azarel ^H5832, Shelemiah ^H8018, Shemariah ^H8114, 42 Shallum ^H7967, Amariah ^H568, and Joseph ^H3130. 43 Of the sons ^H1121 of Nebo ^H5015 there were Jeiel ^H3262, Mattithiah ^H4993, Zabad ^H2066, Zebina ^H2081, Jaddai ^H3035, Joel ^H3100, and Benaiah ^H1141. 44 All ^H3605 of these ^H428 men ^H428 had married ^H5375 foreign ^H5237 wives ^H802, and some ^H4480 of them had ^H3426 wives ^H802 by whom they had ^H7760 children ^H1121.
