The Devastation by Locusts
1 The word H1697 of the LORD H3068 that came H1961 to Joel H3100, the son H1121 of Pethuel H6602:
2 Hear H8085 this H2088, you elders H2205,
And listen H238, all H3605 inhabitants H3427 of the land H776.
Has anything like this H2088 happened H1961 in your days H3117,
Or H518 in your fathers’ H1 days H3117?
3 Tell H5608 your sons H1121 about it,
And have your sons H1121 tell their sons H1121,
And their sons H1121 the next H312 generation H1755.
4 What H3499 the gnawing H1501 locust H1501 has left H3499, the [fn]swarming H697 locust H697 has eaten H398;
And what H3499 the swarming H697 locust H697 has left H3499, the creeping H3218 locust H3218 has eaten H398;
And what H3499 the creeping H3218 locust H3218 has left H3499, the stripping H2625 locust H2625 has eaten H398.
5 Awake H6974, you heavy H7910 drinkers H7910, and weep H1058;
And wail H3213, all H3605 you wine H3196 drinkers H8354,
Because H5921 of the sweet H6071 wine H6071,
For it has been eliminated H3772 from your mouth H6310.
6 For a nation H1471 has [fn]invaded H5927 my land H776,
Mighty H6099 and without H369 number H4557;
Its teeth H8127 are the teeth H8127 of a lion H738,
And it has the jaws H4973 of a lioness H3833.
7 It has made H7760 my vine H1612 a waste H8047
And my fig H8384 tree H8384 a stump H7111.
It has stripped H2834 them bare H2834 and hurled H7993 them away H7993;
Their branches H8299 have become H3835 white H3835.
8 Wail H421 like a virgin H1330 clothed H2296 with sackcloth H8242
For the groom H1167 of her youth H5271.
9 The grain offering H4503 and the drink H5262 offering H5262 have been cut H3772 off H3772
From the house H1004 of the LORD H3068.
The ministers H8334 of the LORD H3068.
10 The field H7704 is ruined H7703,
For the grain H1715 is ruined H7703,
The new H8492 wine H8492 has dried H3001 up H3001,
Fresh H3323 oil H3323 has [fn]failed H535.
11 Be H954 ashamed H954, you farm H406 workers H406,
Wail H3213, you vinedressers H3755,
For the wheat H2406 and the barley H8184;
Because H3588 the harvest H7105 of the field H7704 is destroyed H6.
12 The vine H1612 has dried H3001 up H3001
And the fig H8384 tree H8384 has withered H535;
The pomegranate H7416, the palm H8558 also H1571, and the apple H8598 tree H8598,
All H3605 the trees H6086 of the field H7704 have dried H3001 up H3001.
Indeed H3588, joy H8342 has dried H3001 up H3001
From the sons H1121 of mankind H120.
13 Put H2296 on H2296 sackcloth
And mourn H5594, you priests H3548;
Wail H3213, you ministers H8334 of the altar H4196!
Come H935, spend H3885 the H3885 night H3885 in sackcloth H8242,
You ministers H8334 of my God H430,
For the grain offering H4503 and the drink H5262 offering H5262
Have been withheld H4513 from the house H1004 of your God H430.
Starvation and Drought
14 Consecrate H6942 a fast H6685,
Proclaim H7121 a solemn H6116 assembly H6116;
And all H3605 the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776
To the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 your God H430,
And cry H2199 out H2199 to the LORD H3068.
15 Woe H162 for the day H3117!
For the day H3117 of the LORD H3068 is near H7138,
And it will come H935 as destruction H7701 from the [fn]Almighty H7706.
16 Has food H400 not been cut H3772 off H3772 before H5048 our eyes H5869, and
Joy H8057 and rejoicing H1524 from the house H1004 of our God H430?
17 The [fn]seeds H6507 have dried H5685 up under H8478 their shovels H4053;
The storehouses H214 have become H8074 desolate H8074,
The grain H4460 silos H4460 are ruined H2040,
Because H3588 the grain H1715 has dried H3001 up H3001.
18 How H4100 the animals H929 have groaned H584!
The herds H5739 of cattle H1241 have wandered H943 aimlessly H943
Because H3588 there H369 is H369 no H369 pasture H4829 for them;
Even H1571 the flocks H5739 of sheep H6629 have [fn]suffered H816.
19 To You, LORD H3068, I cry H7121 out H7121;
For fire H784 has devoured H398 the pastures H4999 of the wilderness H4057,
And the flame H3852 has burned H3857 up H3857 all H3605 the trees H6086 of the field H7704.
20 Even H1571 the animals H929 of the field H7704 [fn]pant H6165 for You;
For the stream H650 beds H650 of water H4325 are dried H3001 up H3001,
And fire H784 has devoured H398 the pastures H4999 of the wilderness H4057.
