The Words of Lemuel
1 The words H1697 of King H4428 Lemuel H3927, the pronouncement H4853 which H834 his mother H517 taught H3256 him:
And what H4100, son H1248 of my womb H990?
And what H4100, son H1248 of my vows H5088?
3 Do not give H5414 your strength H2428 to women H802,
Or your ways H1870 to that which destroys H4229 kings H4428.
4 It is not for kings H4428, Lemuel H3927,
It is not for kings H4428 to drink H8354 wine H3196,
Or for rulers H7336 to desire H183 intoxicating H7941 drink H7941,
5 Otherwise H6435 they will drink H8354 and forget H7911 what is decreed H2710,
And pervert H8132 the [fn]rights H1779 of all H3605 the [fn]needy H1121 H6040.
6 Give H5414 intoxicating H7941 drink H7941 to one who is perishing H6,
And wine H3196 to one [fn]whose life H5315 is bitter H4751.
7 Let him drink H8354 and forget H7911 his poverty H7389,
And remember H2142 his trouble H5999 no H3808 more H5750.
8 Open H6605 your mouth H6310 for the people H483 who H483 cannot H483 speak H483,
For the [fn]rights H1779 of all H3605 the [fn]unfortunate H2475 H1121.
9 Open H6605 your mouth H6310, judge H8199 righteously H6664,
And [fn]defend H1777 the H1777 rights H1777 of the poor H6041 and needy H34.
Description of a Worthy Woman
10 An excellent H2428 wife H802, who H4310 can find H4672 her?
For her worth H4377 is far H7350 above H4480 jewels H6443.
11 The heart H3820 of her husband H1167 trusts H982 in her,
And he will have H2637 no H3808 lack H2637 of gain H7998.
12 She does H1580 him good H2896 and not evil H7451
All H3605 the days H3117 of her life H2416.
13 She looks H1875 for wool H6785 and linen H6593,
And works H6213 with her [fn]hands H3709 [fn]in delight H2656.
14 She is like merchant H5503 ships H591;
She brings H935 her food H3899 from afar H4801.
15 And she rises H6965 while it is still H5750 night H3915
And gives H5414 food H2964 to her household H1004,
And [fn]portions H2706 to her attendants H5291.
16 She considers H2161 a field H7704 and buys H3947 it;
From [fn]her earnings H6529 H3709 she plants H5193 a vineyard H3754.
17 She surrounds H2296 her waist H4975 with strength H5797
And makes H553 her arms H2220 strong H553.
18 She senses H2938 that her profit H5504 is good H2896;
Her lamp H5216 does not go H3518 out H3518 at night H3915.
19 She stretches H7971 out H7971 her hands H3027 to the [fn]distaff H3601,
And her [fn]hands H3709 grasp H8551 the spindle H6418.
20 She [fn]extends H6566 her hand H3027 to the poor H6041,
And she stretches H7971 out H7971 her hands H3027 to the needy H34.
21 She is H3372 not afraid H3372 of the snow H7950 for her household H1004,
For all H3605 her household H1004 are clothed H3847 with scarlet H8144.
22 She makes H6213 coverings H4765 for herself;
Her clothing H3830 is fine H8336 linen H8336 and purple H713.
23 Her husband H1167 is known H3045 in the gates H8179,
When he sits H3427 among H5973 the elders H2205 of the land H776.
24 She makes H6213 linen H5466 garments H5466 and sells H4376 them,
And [fn]supplies H5414 belts H2290 to the [fn]tradesmen H3667.
25 Strength H5797 and dignity H1926 are her clothing H3830,
And she smiles H7832 at the [fn]future H314 H3117.
26 She opens H6605 her mouth H6310 in wisdom H2451,
And the [fn]teaching H8451 of kindness H2617 is on her tongue H3956.
27 She watches H6822 over H6822 the activities H1979 of her household H1004,
And does not eat H398 the bread H3899 of idleness H6104.
28 Her children H1121 rise H6965 up H6965 and bless H833 her;
Her husband H1167 also, and he praises H1984 her, saying:
29 “Many H7227 daughters H1323 have done H6213 nobly H2428,
But you excel H5927 them all H3605.”
30 Charm H2580 is deceitful H8267 and beauty H3308 is vain H1892,
But a woman H802 who [fn]fears H3372 the LORD H3068, she shall be praised H1984.
31 Give H5414 her the [fn]product H6529 of her hands H3027,
And let her works H4639 praise H1984 her in the gates H8179.
