Babylon Is Fallen
1 After G3326 these G3778 things G3778 I saw G3708 another G243 angel G32 coming G2597 down G2597 from heaven G3772, having G2192 great G3173 authority G1849, and the earth G1093 was illuminated G5461 from his glory G1391.
2 And he cried G2896 out G2896 with a mighty G2478 voice G5456, saying G3004, “[fn]Fallen G4098, fallen G4098 is Babylon G897 the great G3173! She has become G1096 a dwelling G2732 place G2732 of demons G1140 and a [fn]prison G5438 of every G3956 unclean G169 spirit G4151, and a [fn]prison G5438 of every G3956 unclean G169 and hateful G3404 bird G3732. 3 For all G3956 the nations G1484 have fallen G4098 because G1537 of G1537 the wine G3631 of the passion G2372 of her sexual G4202 immorality G4202, and the kings G935 of the earth G1093 have committed G4203 acts of sexual G4203 immorality G4203 with her, and the merchants G1713 of the earth G1093 have become G4147 rich G4147 from the [fn]excessive G1411 wealth G1411 of her [fn]luxury G4764.”
4 I heard G191 another G243 voice G5456 from heaven G3772, saying G3004, “Come G1831 out G1831 of her, my people G2992, so G2443 that G2443 you will not participate G4790 in her sins G266 and receive G2983 any of her plagues G4127; 5 for her sins G266 have [fn]piled G2853 up G2853 as high G891 as heaven G3772, and God G2316 has remembered G3421 her offenses G92. 6 Pay G591 her back G591 even G2532 as she has paid G591, and [fn]give G1363 back G1363 to her double G1363 G1362 according G2596 to her deeds G2041; in the cup G4221 which G3739 she has mixed G2767, mix G2767 twice G1362 as G1362 much G1362 for her. 7 To the extent G3745 that she glorified G1392 herself G846 and lived G4763 luxuriously G4763, to the same G5118 extent G5118 give G1325 her torment G929 and mourning G3997; for she says G3004 in her heart G2588, ‘I sit G2521 as a queen G938 and I am G1510 not a widow G5503, and will never G3756 see G3708 mourning G3997.’ 8 For this G3778 reason G1223 in one G1520 day G2250 her plagues G4127 will come G2240, [fn]plague G2288 and mourning G3997 and famine G3042, and she will be burned G2618 up G2618 with fire G4442; for the Lord G2962 God G2316 who judges G2919 her is strong G2478.
Grief over Babylon
9 “And the kings G935 of the earth G1093, who committed G4203 acts of sexual G4203 immorality G4203 and lived G4763 luxuriously G4763 with her, will weep G2799 and mourn G2875 over G1909 her when G3752 they see G991 the smoke G2586 of her burning G4451,
10 standing G2476 at a distance G3113 because G1223 of the fear G5401 of her torment G929, saying G3004, ‘Woe G3759, woe G3759, the great G3173 city G4172, Babylon G897, the strong G2478 city G4172! For in one G1520 hour G5610 your judgment G2920 has come G2064.’
11 “And the merchants G1713 of the earth G1093 weep G2799 and mourn G3996 over G1909 her, because G3754 no G3762 one G3762 buys G59 their cargo G1117 any G3765 more G3765— 12 cargo G1117 of gold G5557, silver G696, precious G5093 [fn]stones G3037, and pearls G3135; fine G1039 linen G1039, purple G4209, silk G4596, and scarlet G2847; every G3956 kind of citron G2367 wood G3586, every G3956 article G4632 of ivory G1661, and every G3956 article G4632 made from very G5093 valuable G5093 wood G3586, [fn]bronze G5475, iron G4604, and marble G3139; 13 cinnamon G2792, [fn]spice G6007, incense G2368, perfume G3464, frankincense G3030, wine G3631, olive G1637 oil G1637, fine G4585 flour G4585, wheat G4621, cattle G2934, sheep G4263, and cargo of horses G2462, carriages G4480, [fn]slaves G4983, and human G444 lives G5590. 14 The fruit G3703 [fn]you long G1939 for G1939 has left G565 you, and all G3956 things that were luxurious G3045 and splendid G2986 have passed G622 away G622 from you and people will no G3765 longer G3765 find G2147 them. 15 The merchants G1713 of these G3778 things G3778, who became G4147 rich G4147 from her, will stand G2476 at a distance G3113 because G1223 of the fear G5401 of her torment G929, weeping G2799 and mourning G3996, 16 saying G3004, ‘Woe G3759, woe G3759, the great G3173 city G4172, she who was clothed G4016 in fine G1039 linen G1039 and purple G4210 and scarlet G2847, and [fn]adorned G5558 with gold G5553, precious G5093 [fn]stones G3037, and pearls G3135; 17 for in one G1520 hour G5610 such G5118 great G5118 wealth G4149 has been laid G2049 waste G2049!’ And every G3956 shipmaster G2942 and every G3956 [fn]passenger G1909 G5117 G4126 and sailor G3492, and all G3745 who G3745 [fn]make G2038 their living G2038 by the sea G2281, stood G2476 at a distance G3113, 18 and were crying G2896 out G2896 as they saw G991 the smoke G2586 of her burning G4451, saying G3004, ‘What G5101 city is like G3664 the great G3173 city G4172?’ 19 And they threw G906 dust G5522 on their heads G2776 and were crying G2896 out G2896, weeping G2799 and mourning G3996, saying G3004, ‘Woe G3759, woe G3759, the great G3173 city G4172, in which G3739 all G3956 who had G2192 ships G4143 at sea G2281 became G4147 rich G4147 from her prosperity G5094, for in one G1520 hour G5610 she has been laid G2049 waste G2049!’ 20 Rejoice G2165 over G1909 her, O heaven G3772, and you [fn]saints G40 and apostles G652 and prophets G4396, because G3754 God G2316 has [fn]pronounced G2919 judgment G2917 for you against G1537 her.”
21 Then G2532 [fn]a strong G2478 angel G32 picked G142 up G142 a stone G3037 like G5613 a great G3173 millstone G6061 and threw G906 it into the sea G2281, saying G3004, “So G3779 will Babylon G897, the great G3173 city G4172, be thrown G906 down with violence G3731, and will never G3756 G3361 be found G2147 again G2089. 22 And the sound G5456 of harpists G2790, musicians G3451, flute G834 players G834, and trumpeters G4538 will never G3756 G3361 be heard G191 in you again G2089; and no G3756 G3361 G3956 craftsman G5079 of any G3956 craft G5078 will ever G3756 G3361 be found G2147 in you again G2089; and the sound G5456 of a mill G3458 will never G3756 G3361 be heard G191 in you again G2089; 23 and the light G5457 of a lamp G3088 will never G3756 G3361 shine G5316 in you again G2089; and the voice G5456 of the groom G3566 and bride G3565 will never G3756 G3361 be heard G191 in you again G2089; for your merchants G1713 were the powerful G3175 people G3175 of the earth G1093, because G3754 all G3956 the nations G1484 were deceived G4105 by your witchcraft G5331. 24 And in her was found G2147 the blood G129 of prophets G4396 and of [fn]saints G40, and of all G3956 who have been slaughtered G4969 on the earth G1093.”
