Isaiah 26

Isa 26:1-19—The worship and testimony of restored and converted Israel.

Isa 26:1 In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

In that day

Isa 2:11.

salvation will God appoint for walls

Isa 60:18.

Isa 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

trusteth

Scofield Psalm 2:12, note.

Isa 26:4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

everlasting strength

Heb. the rock of ages. Deu 32:4.

Isa 26:7 The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

uprightness

Righteousness. Eze 18:5-9. (Gen 6:9; Luk 2:25.)

Isa 26:16 LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.

in trouble have they visited thee

Hos 5:15.

Isa 26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

Thy dead men shall live

Resurrection. Dan 12:2, 13. (Job 19:25; 1 Cor 15:52.)

body

Eliminate the supplied words, men, and, together with. "Body" is in the plural, "bodies." Isaiah 26:19-21 with chapter 27, constitute Jehovah's answer to the plaint of Israel, Isaiah 26:11-18. Verse 19 should read: "Thy dead shall live: my dead bodies shall rise" (i.e. the dead bodies of Jehovah's people). The restoration and re-establishment of Israel as a nation is also spoken of as a resurrection (Eze 37:1-11), and many hold that no more than this is meant in Isa 26:19. But since the first resurrection is unto participation in the kingdom (Rev 20:4-6), it seems the better view that both meanings are here.

Isa 26:20-21—Retrospect: order of events in establishing the kingdom. (1) The Gentile world-power destroyed.

Isa 26:20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

the indignation

Day (of Jehovah). Isa 26:20, 21; Isa 34:1-8. (Isa 2:10-22; Rev 19:11-21).

Isa 26:21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

to punish the inhabitants of the earth

Armageddon (battle of). Isa 34:1-8. (Rev 16:14; 19:21.)
