Isaiah 6

Isa 6:1-4—Isaiah's transforming vision. (Cf. Jos 5:13, 14; Job 42:5, 6; Eze 1:28; Dan 10:5-11; Rev 1:12-19.)

Isa 6:1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.

2Ki 15:7.

Lord sitting upon a throne

1Ki 22:19; Jhn 12:41; Rev 4:2.

Isa 6:2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

the seraphims

Heb. Burners. The word occurs only here. Cf. Scofield Ezekiel 1:5, note. The Seraphim are, in many respects, in contrast with the Cherubim, though both are expressive of the divine holiness, which demands that the sinner shall have access to divine presence only through a sacrifice which really vindicates the righteousness of God. (Scofield Rom 3:24-26, notes), and that the saint shall be cleansed before serving. Gen 3:22-24 illustrates the first; Isa 6:1-8 the second. The Cherubim may be said to have to do with the altar, the Seraphim with the laver. See Scofield Psalm 51:7, note; John 13:10, note. The Seraphim appear to be actual angelic beings.

Eze 1:11.

Isa 6:4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

the house was filled with smoke

Exo 40:34; 1Ki 8:10.

Isa 6:5—The effect of the vision.

Isa 6:5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

the King, the LORD of hosts

Inspiration. Isa 6:5-9; Isa 8:1. (Exo 4:15; Rev 22:19.)

Isa 6:6-8—The cleansing fire.

Isa 6:9-13—Isaiah's new commission. (Cf. Mat 13:14.)

Isa 6:9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

Hear ye indeed, but understand not

Isa 6:9, 10; Mat 13:14, 15; Mar 4:12; Luk 8:10; Jhn 12:40; Act 28:26, 27; 2Co 3:14, 15.

Isa 6:13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

a tenth
