Leviticus 8

Lev 8:1-5—Consecration of the priests.

Lev 8:2 Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread;

Aaron

The priests did not consecrate themselves, all was done by another, in this instance Moses, acting for Jehovah. The priests simply presented their bodies in the sense of Romans 12:1.

unleavened bread

Leaven. vs. 2, 26; Lev 10:12. (Gen 19:3; Mat 13:33.)

Lev 8:6—Consecration: (1) cleansing (Eph 5:25-27; John 13:3-10).

Lev 8:7-9—Consecration: (2) the high priest clothed.

Lev 8:8 And he put the breastplate upon him: also he put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim.

Urim and the Thummim

See Scofield Exodus 28:30, note.

U-rim, "lights." Thum-mim, "perfection."

Lev 8:10-12—Consecration: (3) the high priest's anointing.

Lev 8:12 And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

poured of the anointing oil

Two important distinctions are made in the case of the high priest, thus confirming his typical relation to Christ the anti-type:

  1. Aaron is anointed before the sacrifices are slain, while in the case of the priests the application of blood precedes the anointing. Christ the sinless One required no preparation for receiving the anointing oil, symbol of the Holy Spirit;
  2. upon the high priest only was the anointing oil poured. "God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him" (John 3:34). "Thy God hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows." (Hebrews 1:9).

Lev 8:13—Consecration: (4) the priests clothed.

Lev 8:14-22—Consecration: (5) the offerings.

Lev 8:15 And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make reconciliation upon it.

sanctified

Exo 29:19, 31.

Lev 8:23-26—Consecration: (6) the blood applied.

Lev 8:23 And he slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.

Lev 14:14.

Lev 8:24 And he brought Aaron's sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

Exo 29:22.

Lev 8:27-29—Consecration: (7) the hands filled.

Lev 8:29 And Moses took the breast, and waved it for a wave offering before the LORD: for of the ram of consecration it was Moses' part; as the LORD commanded Moses.

Exo 29:26.

Lev 8:30—Consecration: (8) the anointing of the priests.

Lev 8:33-36—Consecration: (10) the priests separated unto God.

Lev 8:34 As he hath done this day, so the LORD hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.
