胸牌很重要，因为在决断胸牌…刻着以色列儿子名字的，带在胸前，在耶和华面前常作纪念。在胸前 (意思是亚伦的心上) 提到了三次，使其成为一个重要的概念。或许是要表明神对以色列的爱，而亚伦的服侍是爱的提醒。
当大祭司进圣所到耶和华面前时，重要的是要在寻求耶和华的旨意时，清楚地显露且突出十二颗宝石 (代表十二支派)。亚伦在神面前代表了整个民族。
乌陵和土明要放在决断的胸牌里。这两个是怎样的物品呢？显然，它们是用于决定神的旨意。在民数记 27:21，以利亚撒 "要凭乌陵的判断，在耶和华面前为他求问"。在以斯拉记 2:63，祭司可以 "用乌陵和土明决疑"。撒母耳记上 28:6 说扫罗 "求问耶和华"，而耶和华不用任何方式回答他，包括乌陵。所以，乌陵和土明貌似是用来决定耶和华旨意的物体，但如何操作和如何显明耶和华旨意的确切性质依然具有推测性。
乌陵和土明的字面含义分别是 "光" 和 "完美"。十二世纪一位称为 Rashi 的拉比论到乌陵和土明说，"是神难以言喻的名字藏在胸牌里。通过这一媒介，大祭司启发了他的话语且完善了他的话语。在第二圣殿中，有一块胸牌，因为如果没有所要求的衣服，大祭司就无法服侍。然而，这以弗得并没有神的名字嵌在其中。"
另一个有趣的事实是 "乌陵" 一词以希伯来文的第一个字母开始，而 "土明" 是以希伯来文的最后一个字母开始。这其中的意义也是未知的，但是在寻求耶和华旨意的语境中可能暗含着完整。以色列也用掣签的方式决定神的旨意。扫罗掣签决定谁有罪 (撒母耳记上 14:42)。门徒掣签从二人中选一人代替犹大，成为第十二个门徒 (使徒行传 1:24-26)。
新约告诉我们神对我们的旨意是成圣 (帖撒罗尼迦前书 4:3)。成圣意思是要在我们的生活方式上分别出来。这一指示与给以色列的所有指示一致。神期望我们以自治的形式生活，祝福他人，使他人受益。这对我们是最好的路，曾经是，现在也是。
