Ephraim’s Captivity Predicted
1 Woe H1945 to the proud H1348 crown H5850 of the habitually H7910 drunk H7910 of Ephraim H669,
And to the fading H5034 flower H6731 of its glorious H6643 beauty H6643,
Which H834 is at the head H7218 of the [fn]fertile H8081 valley H1516
Of those who are [fn]overcome H1986 with wine H3196!
2 Behold H2009, the Lord H136 has a strong H2389 and mighty H533 agent;
As a storm H2230 of hail H1259, a tempest H8178 of destruction H6986,
Like a storm H2230 of mighty H3524 overflowing H7857 waters H4325,
He has thrown H5117 it down H5117 to the earth H776 with His hand H3027.
3 The splendid H1348 crown H5850 of the habitually H7910 drunk H7910 of Ephraim H669 is trampled H7429 underfoot H7272.
4 And the fading H5034 flower H6731 of its glorious H6643 beauty H6643,
Which H834 is at the head H7218 of the [fn]fertile H8081 valley H1516,
Will be like the first-ripe H1063 fig H1063 prior H2962 to the summer H7019,
Which H834 [fn]one sees H7200,
And [fn]as soon H5750 as it is in his [fn]hand H3709,
He swallows H1104 it.
5 On that day H3117 the LORD H3068 of armies H6635 will become H1961 a beautiful H6643 crown H5850
And a glorious H8597 wreath H6843 to the remnant H7605 of His people H5971;
6 A spirit H7307 of justice H4941 for him who sits H3427 in judgment H4941,
A strength H1369 to those who repel H7725 the [fn]onslaught H4421 at the gate H8179.
7 And these H428 also H1571 reel H7686 with wine H3196 and stagger H8582 from intoxicating H7941 drink H7941:
The priest H3548 and the prophet H5030 reel H7686 with intoxicating H7941 drink H7941,
They are confused H1104 by wine H3196, they stagger H8582 from intoxicating H7941 drink H7941;
They reel H7686 while [fn]having visions H7203,
They stagger H6328 when rendering a verdict H6417.
8 For all H3605 the tables H7979 are full H4390 of filthy H6675 vomit H6892, without H1097 a single clean place H4725.
9 “To whom H4310 would He teach H3384 knowledge H1844,
And to whom H4310 would He interpret H995 the message H8052?
Those just weaned H1580 from milk H2461?
Those just taken H6267 from the breast H7699?
10 “For He says,
‘[fn]Order H6673 on order H6673, order H6673 on order H6673,
Line H6957 on line H6957, line H6957 on line H6957,
A little H2191 here H8033, a little H2191 there H8033.’”
11 Indeed H3588, He will speak H1696 to this H2088 people H5971
Through stammering H3934 lips H8193 and a foreign H312 tongue H3956,
12 He who H834 said H559 to them, “This H2088 is the place H4496 of H4496 quiet H4496, give H5117 rest H5117 to the weary H5889,”
And, “This H2088 is the resting H4774 place H4774,” but they would H14 not listen H8085.
13 So the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 to them will be,
“[fn]Order H6673 on order H6673, order H6673 on order H6673,
Line H6957 on line H6957, line H6957 on line H6957,
A little H2191 here H8033, a little H2191 there H8033,”
That they may go H1980 and stumble H3782 backward H268, be broken H7665, snared H3369, and taken H3920 captive H3920.
Judah Is Warned
14 Therefore H3651, hear H8085 the word H1697 of the LORD H3068, you scoffers H582 H3944,
Who rule H4910 this H2088 people H5971 who H834 are in Jerusalem H3389,
15 Because H3588 you have said H559, “We have made H3772 a covenant H1285 with death H4194,
And with [fn]Sheol H7585 we have made H6213 a [fn]pact H2374.
The [fn]gushing H7857 flood H7752 will not reach H935 us when H3588 it passes H5674 by H5674,
Because H3588 we have made H7760 falsehood H3577 our refuge H4268 and we have concealed H5641 ourselves with deception H8267.”
16 Therefore H3651 this H3541 is H3541 what H3541 the Lord H136 [fn]GOD H3068 says H559:
“Behold H2009, I am laying H3245 a stone H68 in Zion H6726, a tested H976 stone H68,
A precious H3368 cornerstone H6438 for the foundation H4143, [fn]firmly H3245 placed H3245.
The one who believes H539 in it will not be [fn]disturbed H2363.
17 “I will make H7760 justice H4941 the measuring H6957 line H6957
And righteousness H6666 the level H4949;
Then hail H1259 will sweep H3261 away H3261 the refuge H4268 of lies H3577,
And the waters H4325 will overflow H7857 the secret H5643 place H5643.
18 “Your covenant H1285 with death H4194 will be [fn]canceled H3722,
And your pact H2374 with Sheol H7585 will not stand H6965;
When H3588 the [fn]gushing H7857 flood H7752 passes H5674 through H5674,
Then you will become H1961 its trampling H4823 ground.
19 “As often H1767 as it passes H5674 through H5674, it will [fn]seize H3947 you;
For morning H1242 after morning H1242 it will pass H5674 through H5674, anytime during the day H3117 or night H3915,
And it will be [fn]sheer H7534 terror H2113 to understand H995 [fn]what H8052 it H8047 means H8052.”
20 The bed H4702 is too H4480 short H7114 on which to stretch H8311 out,
And the blanket H4541 is H6887 too H6887 [fn]small H6887 to wrap H3664 oneself in.
21 For the LORD H3068 will rise H6965 up H6965 as at Mount H2022 Perazim H6559,
He will be stirred H7264 up H7264 as in the Valley H6010 of Gibeon H1391,
To do H6213 His task H4639, His [fn]unusual H2114 task H4639,
And to work H5647 His work H5656, His [fn]extraordinary H5237 work H5656.
22 And now H6258 do not carry H3887 on H3887 as H3887 scoffers H3887,
Or H6435 your shackles H4147 will be made H2388 stronger H2388;
For I have heard H8085 from the Lord H136 [fn]GOD H3068 of armies H6635
Of decisive H2782 destruction H3617 on all H3605 the earth H776.
23 Listen H238 and hear H8085 my voice H6963,
Pay H7181 attention H7181 and hear H8085 my words H565.
24 Does the [fn]farmer H2790 plow H2790 [fn]continually H3605 H3117 to plant H2232 seed H2232?
Does he continually [fn]turn H6605 and break H7702 up H7702 his ground H127?
25 Does he not level H7737 its surface H6440
And sow H6327 dill H7100 and scatter H2236 cumin H3646
And [fn]plant H7760 wheat H2406 in rows H7795,
Barley H8184 in its place H5567 and rye H3698 within its [fn]area H1367?
26 For his God H430 instructs H3256 and teaches H3384 him properly H4941.
27 For dill H7100 is not threshed H1758 with a threshing H2742 sledge H2742,
Nor H3808 is the cartwheel H5699 [fn]driven H5437 over H5921 cumin H3646;
But dill H7100 is beaten H2251 out H2251 with a rod H4294, and cumin H3646 with a club H7626.
28 Grain for bread H3899 is crushed H1854,
Indeed H3588, he does not continue H1758 to thresh H1758 it forever H5331.
Because the wheel H1536 of his cart H5699 and his horses H6571 eventually [fn]damage H2000 it,
He does not thresh H1854 it longer.
29 This H2088 also H1571 comes H3318 from the LORD H3068 of armies H6635,
Who has made H6381 His counsel H6098 wonderful H6381 and His wisdom H8454 great H1431.
